Rembrandt drawing stolen from California hotel (AP)
LOS ANGELES ? A 17th Century drawing by Rembrandt was snatched from a private art display at a California luxury hotel while a curator was momentarily distracted, officials said Monday.
The theft of the $250,000 sketch from the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in the upmarket seaside community of Marina del Rey happened around 10:30 p.m. Saturday night while someone who seemed interested in buying another piece held the curator's attention for a few minutes.
"When the curator turned back to the Rembrandt, it was gone," Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said. It was not clear whether the person talking to the curator was connected to the theft, though Whitman said a team of at least two people was involved.
The sketch, called "The Judgment," was completed around 1655 and is signed on the back by the Dutch master. Rembrandt von Rijn is widely regarded as one of the finest painters in European art history and his worldwide name recognition has made his work a common target for thieves.
"Rembrandt is a name that criminals know or should know," said Chris Marinello, executive director of the London-based Art Loss Register, an international database of stolen artworks. "When they come across one, they see dollar signs."
Marinello said the theft was likely a crime of opportunity and not an operation carried at the command of a mysterious criminal with a private art collection, as is often depicted in movies.
"Hollywood would love us to believe there are paintings being ordered stolen," he said. "We have yet to find that."
Artworks tend to surface either very quickly after they are stolen or else disappear into the underworld where they are traded between criminals at a fraction of their value for drugs and other illicit materials, Marinello said.
The sketch was being displayed on an easel or wooden stand and was apparently not fastened down in any way, Whitmore said.
He described the theft as well-executed, "but not executed well enough to get away with," adding that investigators had several strong leads and that detectives were looking at video surveillance from the hotel.
Ritz-Carlton spokeswoman Vivian Deuschl said she could not comment because the theft was a police matter.
A sketch artist was putting together a suspect composite drawing based on witness accounts. It will be released at the end of the week.
The drawing was part of an exhibit at the hotel sponsored by the Linearis Institute based in the San Francisco Bay area community of Hercules. Messages left Monday weren't returned.
The stolen sketch was drawn with a quill pen and depicts what appears to be a court scene with a man prostrating himself before a judge.
Marinello said the artist thieves most commonly target is Picasso because of the volume of the Spanish painter's work and his name recognition.
In July, a thief walked into a San Francisco gallery and snatched a Picasso sketch valued at more than $200,000. The arrest of the suspect ultimately led police to a trove of other stolen artworks in a New Jersey apartment.
In 1990, two criminals posing as police officers robbed the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum during the St. Patrick's Day parade in Boston. Marinello said the works, which included Rembrandt's only seascape, had a combined worth of as much as $500,000. Those paintings are still missing.
Anthony Amore, chief investigator at the museum and co-author of the book "Stealing Rembrandts," told the Los Angeles Times there have been 81 documented thefts of the artist's work in the past 100 years.
Marina del Rey is a sprawling community and small-boat harbor on Santa Monica Bay, less than 20 miles from downtown Los Angeles.

Berkeley Lab researchers develop technique for dynamically controlling plasmonic airy beams
One of the earliest lessons in science that students learn is that a ray or beam of light travels in a straight line. Students also learn that light rays fan out or diffract as they travel. Recently it was discovered that light rays can travel without diffraction in a curved arc in free space. These rays of light were dubbed "Airy beams," after the English astronomer Sir George Biddell Airy, who studied what appears to be the parabolic trajectory of light in a rainbow.
Now, scientists with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have demonstrated the first technique that provides dynamic control in real-time of the curved trajectories of Airy beams over metallic surfaces. This development paves the way for fast-as-light, ultra-compact communication systems and optoelectronic devices,and could also stimulate revolutions in chemistry, biology and medicine.
The key to the success of this work was their ability to directly couple free-space Airy beams using a standard tool of optics called a "grating coupler" - to quasi-particles called surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Directing a laser beam of light across the surface of a metal nanostructure generates electronic surface waves called plasmons that roll through the metal's conduction electrons (those loosely attached to molecules and atoms). The resulting interaction between plasmons and photons creates SPPs. By directly coupling Airy beams to SPPs, the researchers are able to manipulate light at an extremely small scale beyond the diffraction limit.
"Dynamic controllability of SPPs is extremely desirable for reconfigurable optical interconnections," says Xiang Zhang, the leader of this research. "We have provided a novel approach of plasmonic Airy beam to manipulate SPPs without the need of any waveguide structures over metallic surfaces, providing dynamic control of their ballistic trajectories despite any surface roughness and defects, or even getting around obstacles. This is promising not only for applications in reconfigurable optical interconnections but also for precisely manipulating particles on extremely small scales."
Zhang, a principal investigator with Berkeley Lab's Materials Sciences Division and director of the University of California at Berkeley's Nano-scale Science and Engineering Center (SINAM), is the corresponding author of a paper published in the journal Optics Letters. The paper is titled "Plasmonic Airy beams with dynamically controlled trajectories." Coauthoring the paper were Peng Zhang, Sheng Wang, Yongmin Liu, Xiaobo Yin, Changgui Lu and Zhigang Chen.
"Up to now, different plasmonic elements for manipulating surface plasmons were realized either through structuring metal surfaces or by placing dielectric structures on metals," says Peng Zhang, lead author of the Optics Letters paper and member of Xiang Zhang's research group. "Both approaches are based on the fabrication of permanent nanostructures on the metal surface, which are very difficult if not impossible to reconfigure in real time. Reconfigurability is crucial to optical interconnections, which in turn are crucial for high performance optical computing and communication systems. The reconfigurability of our technique is a huge advantage over previous approaches."
Adds co-author Zhigang Chen, a principal investigator with the Department of Physics and Astronomy at San Francisco State University, "With the reconfigurability of our plasmonic Airy beams, a small number of optical devices can be employed to perform a large number of functions within a compact system. In addition, the unique properties of the plasmonic Airy beams open new opportunities for on-chip energy routing along arbitrary trajectories in plasmonic circuitry, and allows for dynamic manipulations of nano-particles on metal surfaces and in magneto-electronic devices."
Dynamic control of the plasmonic Airy beams is provided by a computer-controlled spatial light modulator, a device similar to a liquid crystal display that can be used to offset the incoming light waves from a laser beam with respect to a cubic phase system mask and a Fourier lens. This generates a plasmonic Airy beam on the surface of a metal whose ballistic motion can be modified.
"The direction and speed of the displacement between the incoming light and the cubic phase mask can be controlled with ease simply by displaying an animation of the shifting mask pattern as well as a shifting slit aperture in the spatial light modulator," Peng Zhang says. "Depending on the refresh rate of the spatial light modulator this can be done in real time. Furthermore, our spatial light modulator not only sets the plasmonic Airy beam into a general ballistic motion, it also enables us to control the Airy beam's peak intensity at different positions along its curved path."
The ability of the spatial light modulator to dynamically control the ballistic motions of plasmonic Airy beams without the need of any permanent guiding structures should open doors to a number of new technologies, according to Xiang and Peng Zhang and their collaborators. For example, in nano-photonics, it enables researchers to design practical reconfigurable plasmonic sensors or perform nano-particle tweezing on microchips. In biology and chemistry, it allows researchers to dynamically manipulate molecules.
Says Sheng Wang, second lead author of the Optics Letters paper, "The ultrafine nature of SPPs is extremely promising for applications of nanolithography or nanoimaging. Having dynamic tunable plasmonic Airy beams should also be useful for ultrahigh resolution bioimaging. For example, we can directly illuminate a target, for example a protein, bypassing any obstacles or reducing the background."
Adds co-author Yongmin Liu, "Our findings may inspire researchers to explore other types of non-diffracting surface waves, such as electron spin waves, in other two-dimensional systems, including graphene and topological insulators."

One of the earliest lessons in science that students learn is that a ray or beam of light travels in a straight line. Students also learn that light rays fan out or diffract as they travel. Recently it was discovered that light rays can travel without diffraction in a curved arc in free space. These rays of light were dubbed "Airy beams," after the English astronomer Sir George Biddell Airy, who studied what appears to be the parabolic trajectory of light in a rainbow.
Now, scientists with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have demonstrated the first technique that provides dynamic control in real-time of the curved trajectories of Airy beams over metallic surfaces. This development paves the way for fast-as-light, ultra-compact communication systems and optoelectronic devices,and could also stimulate revolutions in chemistry, biology and medicine.
The key to the success of this work was their ability to directly couple free-space Airy beams using a standard tool of optics called a "grating coupler" - to quasi-particles called surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Directing a laser beam of light across the surface of a metal nanostructure generates electronic surface waves called plasmons that roll through the metal's conduction electrons (those loosely attached to molecules and atoms). The resulting interaction between plasmons and photons creates SPPs. By directly coupling Airy beams to SPPs, the researchers are able to manipulate light at an extremely small scale beyond the diffraction limit.
"Dynamic controllability of SPPs is extremely desirable for reconfigurable optical interconnections," says Xiang Zhang, the leader of this research. "We have provided a novel approach of plasmonic Airy beam to manipulate SPPs without the need of any waveguide structures over metallic surfaces, providing dynamic control of their ballistic trajectories despite any surface roughness and defects, or even getting around obstacles. This is promising not only for applications in reconfigurable optical interconnections but also for precisely manipulating particles on extremely small scales."
Zhang, a principal investigator with Berkeley Lab's Materials Sciences Division and director of the University of California at Berkeley's Nano-scale Science and Engineering Center (SINAM), is the corresponding author of a paper published in the journal Optics Letters. The paper is titled "Plasmonic Airy beams with dynamically controlled trajectories." Coauthoring the paper were Peng Zhang, Sheng Wang, Yongmin Liu, Xiaobo Yin, Changgui Lu and Zhigang Chen.
"Up to now, different plasmonic elements for manipulating surface plasmons were realized either through structuring metal surfaces or by placing dielectric structures on metals," says Peng Zhang, lead author of the Optics Letters paper and member of Xiang Zhang's research group. "Both approaches are based on the fabrication of permanent nanostructures on the metal surface, which are very difficult if not impossible to reconfigure in real time. Reconfigurability is crucial to optical interconnections, which in turn are crucial for high performance optical computing and communication systems. The reconfigurability of our technique is a huge advantage over previous approaches."
Adds co-author Zhigang Chen, a principal investigator with the Department of Physics and Astronomy at San Francisco State University, "With the reconfigurability of our plasmonic Airy beams, a small number of optical devices can be employed to perform a large number of functions within a compact system. In addition, the unique properties of the plasmonic Airy beams open new opportunities for on-chip energy routing along arbitrary trajectories in plasmonic circuitry, and allows for dynamic manipulations of nano-particles on metal surfaces and in magneto-electronic devices."
Dynamic control of the plasmonic Airy beams is provided by a computer-controlled spatial light modulator, a device similar to a liquid crystal display that can be used to offset the incoming light waves from a laser beam with respect to a cubic phase system mask and a Fourier lens. This generates a plasmonic Airy beam on the surface of a metal whose ballistic motion can be modified.
"The direction and speed of the displacement between the incoming light and the cubic phase mask can be controlled with ease simply by displaying an animation of the shifting mask pattern as well as a shifting slit aperture in the spatial light modulator," Peng Zhang says. "Depending on the refresh rate of the spatial light modulator this can be done in real time. Furthermore, our spatial light modulator not only sets the plasmonic Airy beam into a general ballistic motion, it also enables us to control the Airy beam's peak intensity at different positions along its curved path."
The ability of the spatial light modulator to dynamically control the ballistic motions of plasmonic Airy beams without the need of any permanent guiding structures should open doors to a number of new technologies, according to Xiang and Peng Zhang and their collaborators. For example, in nano-photonics, it enables researchers to design practical reconfigurable plasmonic sensors or perform nano-particle tweezing on microchips. In biology and chemistry, it allows researchers to dynamically manipulate molecules.
Says Sheng Wang, second lead author of the Optics Letters paper, "The ultrafine nature of SPPs is extremely promising for applications of nanolithography or nanoimaging. Having dynamic tunable plasmonic Airy beams should also be useful for ultrahigh resolution bioimaging. For example, we can directly illuminate a target, for example a protein, bypassing any obstacles or reducing the background."
Adds co-author Yongmin Liu, "Our findings may inspire researchers to explore other types of non-diffracting surface waves, such as electron spin waves, in other two-dimensional systems, including graphene and topological insulators."

Kutcher replaces Sheen as TV's highest-paid actor (Reuters)
NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? Ashton Kutcher has replaced Charlie Sheen as the highest-paid actor on television, bringing in $700,000 per episode of "Two and a Half Men," reports TV Guide Magazine.
In its annual "Who Earns What" issue, the magazine says that Kutcher's salary -- which equates to $16.8 million for a standard 24-episode order -- is actually $500,000 less per episode than what Sheen made last season, before departing in ignominy earlier this year. (Sheen has said his full payment per episode was closer to $2 million, presumably including syndication royalties and other payouts.)
Other surprises from the issue:
Ted Danson will receive $225,000 for each episode of "CSI," which is $125,000 less than what Laurence Fishburne made. But it's on par with other established stars, as both Kiefer Sutherland and Tim Allen will make $225,000 for their respective shows, "Touch" and "Last Man Standing."
Both Scott Pelley and Piers Morgan receive less than a third of what their respective predecessors Katie Couric and Larry King made, and Regis Philbin left "Live! With Regis and Kelly" rather than accept a cut from his $15 million annual salary.
Anderson Cooper will make around $11 million this year combined with his CNN salary and his syndication haul.

They are priceless to me because they are remnants of her view of this world that can never be duplicated. ?Every time I look at them I feel close to her because I am seeing her life through her lens.
She saved everything - like this family photo taken the month I was born. ?My aunt is to the left of my uncle in the glasses. ?My mom is to her left. ?With my grandmother in front of my mom, I wonder if I was here yet...?
It is so interesting to go through her photo library because she took so many photos and saved every image her siblings sent her. ?I believe she has the most complete collection of family memories of all my family. ?
I love this photo of my grandparents right before a trip (I especially love their clothes and the car).
Even more priceless are these photos of my Grandpa Lillo having fun. ?This is exactly how I remember him - I loved spending time with him. ?My parents don't have one photo of him. ?Without my Aunt, I wouldn't have any either. ?Thankfully she took the time...
It's amazing - every single family photo taken through the years except a few were by my Aunt. ?This is incredibly remarkable considering I grew up in Arizona and she lived most of her life n West Yellowstone, Montana. ?Here's one of me and my parents...
And another about a year and a half later after my twin sisters had arrived. ?Even as a toddler I looked a little overwhelmed :) -
The crazy thing is there are literally hundreds of photos of all her siblings and their families just like this - she has more photos of her nieces and nephews than their own parents do. ?It is pretty remarkable. ?In fact, at her funeral we all had a good laugh as her nieces and nephews spoke and each and every one talked about how they just knew they were her favorite. ?She treated everyone like that.
I also love the images she took that were strictly her view on life and the things in her everyday - ?her beloved white mustang I rode in so many times as a toddler...
Or this photo of a Gorilla throwing a tantrum in a zoo - on the back there's only a date - November 15, 1974. ?I wonder if I was with her. ?Some of my favorite childhood memories of her are zoo outings and going to feed the ducks.

TOKYO (AP) ? A team of scientists has reported producing viable sperm using the stem cells of mice in an experiment that researchers hope could one day lead to treating infertile men.
The Kyoto University researchers managed to induce mice stem cells into creating sperm precursors, which were transplanted into infertile male mice. The mice then produced sperm that was successfully used to fertilize eggs in a lab dish.
The offspring were healthy and fertile, according to a paper published online Thursday in the scientific journal Cell.
Members of the research team, led by Mitinori Saitou, said they believe their success may help in the development of infertility treatments in humans, although they said many hurdles remain.
"We have high hopes, but it's not that easy," Saitou told the Associated Press by telephone Friday from Kyoto, in western Japan. "There are many difficult issues ahead in applying this to humans. But it is a first step."
Experts outside the group say it's an important first step toward infertility treatment although there would be a long way.
"This is a very good experiment for thinking about treatment of infertile man but a very very long way," said Toshio Suda, developmental biology professor at Keio University.
He said the Kyoto team's findings were great work but it is not easy to prepare the mature sperm cells at present. If some hurdles are cleared, it could successfully identify "which gene is very important to prepare the sperm."

Suspect in Argentina tourist murders freed on bail (AFP)
BUENOS AIRES (AFP) ? Authorities released on bail a man arrested Monday in connection with the murder of two French women found shot dead in a tourist area in northern Argentina, a court official told AFP.
"The suspect denied all charges before Judge Martin Perez, who ordered his release on bail for lack of merit," said court spokesman Marcelo Baez.
The French women's bodies were found Friday by hikers on a trail in an area overlooking Salta, the capital of a northern province of the same name.
Police had arrested 43-year-old Francisco Tejada -- who rents horses to tourists in the area where the bodies were found -- overnight Monday.
Tejada's wife, Doming Gonzalez, was quoted on the Internet site of El Tribuno de Salta as saying her husband was innocent and was "grabbed because he is poor."
She said Tejada had not been away from home or work for long periods of time in recent days.
French consul general Patrick Flot traveled to Salta on Monday to confer with local authorities, a French embassy source said.
Argentine Foreign Minister Hector Timerman said his country was "appalled by the terrible crime," in a letter to his French counterpart Alain Juppe, adding that authorities were "working hard on the case."
The victims -- Houria Moumni, 24, and Cassandre Bouvier, 29 -- were "brilliant students" of Latin American studies at the Sorbonne, the university's president Marie-Christine Lemardeley said.
They were believed to have been killed sometime last week after going on a hike in the rocky trails that offer panoramic views of Salta, some 1,600 kilometers north of Buenos Aires.
The two women entered the San Lorenzo Gorge on July 15, according to a park registry, but were believed to have been killed sometime between Tuesday and Thursday, and may have been held captive for several days.
One of the woman was shot in the head and apparently sexually abused. The other was shot in the back.
On Sunday, the French foreign ministry expressed "complete confidence in the Argentine authorities... to shed light on these murders so the perpetrators can be identified and tried."
