The phenomenon of swing bowling, in which a cricket ball veers sideways during flight, is not influenced by humidity, researchers say.

Cricketers and sport scientists alike have long hypothesised that high humidity may increase the swing effect.

But precise 3-D studies of cricket balls under varying humidity showed no effect on the balls' shapes.

A report due in Procedia Engineering instead suggests that cloud cover increases swing by stilling the air.

Much like the path of a "curve ball" in baseball or a looping corner kick in football, the swing effect comes from setting up different kinds of air flow on opposite sides of the ball - smooth or "laminar" flow on one side and chaotic "turbulent" flow on the other.

But why the effect is more noticeable during some matches, and even some days in the same match, has had researchers and players stumped.

"Lots of scientists have always tried to discuss this idea around cricket ball swing and the effect of atmospheric conditions, and people talk about humid days being really important," said study co-author David James of Sheffield Hallam University's Centre for Sport Engineering Research.

"The leading hypothesis as to why cricket balls swing was around the fact that the seam on the cricket ball will swell on a humid day, becoming more pronounced, and that might lead to more swing," he told BBC News.

Dr James and his colleagues John Hart at Sheffield and Danielle MacDonald at AUT University in New Zealand made use of the centre's "climate chamber", in which atmopheric conditions can be tightly controlled.

They used a 3-D laser scanner to monitor differently conditioned balls reacted under varying humidity, but found humidity had no detectable effect on the ball's geometry.

Instead, they have pitched in another idea: that bright sunshine - or the lack of it - is to blame for variation in swing.

"When the ground heats, it makes convection currents which make the air rise off the cricket pitch - that creates turbulence in the air on a sunny day," Dr James explained.

"On a cloudy day you get stiller air, because you don't get these convection currents coming off the ground."

Stiller air does less to affect the imbalance of smooth and chaotic flow on either side of the ball that leads to swing, so cloud cover could indirectly be the culprit.

Dr James concedes that the team's hypothesis must now be put to a test under controlled conditions, but they are convinced that humidity is not the variable that should put batters on the back foot.

"We fairly rigorously went through every possible thing around humidity and debunked it," he said.

Lighter winds help in fight against N. Mexico fire

GLENWOOD, N.M. (AP) ? Lighter winds aided crews battling a massive wildfire in southwestern New Mexico's Gila National Forest, but they still were unable to stop the blaze that has raged across more than 190 square miles of mountainous forest lands since last week.

As the strong, erratic gusts slackened Sunday, teams focused on building protection lines on key flanks of the blaze.

The Whitewater-Baldy Complex fire grew to more than 122,000 acres and was about two miles away from the privately owned ghost town of Mogollon.

Denise Ottaviano, a spokeswoman for the crew fighting the blaze, said the fire hasn't made a significant push toward the town. Crews were working to build a protection line between Mogollon and the fire's western edge. Residents in the area were evacuated over the weekend.

The blaze, however, destroyed a dozen homes and several outbuildings on Wednesday in the community of Willow Creek, which remains under evacuation. Officials say crews were taking measures to protect homes in Willow Creek.

No other communities were threatened.

On Sunday, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez authorized the deployment of 15 National Guard soldiers to help secure areas around the fire.

Meanwhile, crews built protection lines on the fire's western and northern edges. They also made preparations to send five helicopters to focus on the blaze's hotspots, but it wasn't clear if the aircraft were deployed Sunday. For the last several days, high winds had prevented them from taking to the air.

Zero percent of the fire has been contained.

Despite tamer winds, crews were still contending with extremely dry conditions and are expecting a decrease in humidity.

State officials had warned residents during the Memorial Day weekend to limit outdoor activities, especially if smoke was visible.

In western Colorado, gusty winds have spread two wildfires that have burned more than 7,000 acres and prompted the evacuation of several campgrounds.

Crews were battling a wildfire that has scorched at least 5,000 acres of rugged canyon land north of Paradox near the Colorado-Utah border.

Sheriff's deputies on Saturday evacuated the Buckeye Reservoir area, a popular recreation spot near the Utah border. The Rock Creek and Sinbad Valley areas also were evacuated.

Meanwhile, winds of more than 60 mph fueled a 2,325-acre fire northwest of Pagosa Springs, and several campgrounds in the area have been evacuated.

Also Sunday, a large wildfire was reported east of Pueblo near Fowler, prompting the closure of U.S. 50. The exact size of the fire wasn't immediately clear.

In California, ground crews with air support were surrounding a stubborn wildfire that has burned through 4,100 acres of grass and brush in rural San Diego County and had it 90 percent contained by evening.

CalFire spokeswoman Roxanne Provaznik says the blaze near Shelter Valley is burning away from the town of Julian in steep, rocky terrain. No structures were threatened.

Shelter Valley is in an unincorporated area of San Diego County, 12 miles east of Julian, within the boundaries of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

Scherzer struck out nine in a rain-shortened outing and Prince Fielder had his first four-hit game with the Tigers, leading Detroit to a 6-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday.

"Hopefully we're relaxing a little bit and doing what we can do pretty good," manager Jim Leyland said. "We're supposed to hit pretty good and we can hit pretty good. I'm not going to get carried away with two games, but it's a pretty good sign."

Carl Pavano (2-4) allowed six runs on 10 hits in 4 1-3 innings for the Twins, who have lost four straight. Justin Morneau and Denard Span homered for Minnesota, but the Twins struck out 16 times.

Slumping Twins slugger Josh Willingham struck out four times and the bottom four hitters in the lineup - Brian Dozier, Alexi Casilla, Drew Butera and Jamey Carroll - went 1 for 14 with 10 strikeouts.

Most of those strikeouts came courtesy of Scherzer, who is looking more and more like the capable sidekick to Justin Verlander he was last year. He fanned four in a row and five of six at one point in the outing, and set down 13 straight after giving up a solo homer to Morneau in the second inning.

The right-hander gave up seven runs in 2 2-3 innings in his first start of the season and has been trying to dig out of that hole ever since. He was tagged for five runs in a win over the White Sox on May 15, but has chewed up two struggling offenses in his last two starts.

Scherzer struck out 15 in a win over the Pirates last week, the most by a Tigers pitcher since Mickey Lolich in 1972. He fanned nine more on Saturday, getting Dozier and Butera twice each before a couple of hits, and a lot of rain, brought an end to his day in the sixth inning.

"I'm really pitching well with three pitches: fastball, slider, change," Scherzer said. "I just keep making a couple mistakes every game leaving a pitch in the middle of the plate where they've been able to do damage with it. That's a good problem and a bad problem at the same time because obviously you're making mistakes and you feel you can make a batter pitch when those happen."

The game started 20 minutes behind schedule because of weather, and was delayed another 42 minutes in the sixth inning when a heavy downpour pelted Target Field.

Octavio Dotel took the mound after the delay and wiggled out of a runners-on-the-corners, one-out jam by striking out Willingham and getting Morneau to pop out to third base. Dotel then struck out the side in the seventh before handing the ball to Joaquin Benoit.

"A good game and everything but to me the hero of the game was Octavio Dotel," Leyland said.

The Tigers jumped on Pavano in the first, getting an RBI double from Cabrera and an RBI single from Fielder to take a quick 2-0 lead. The veteran right-hander, who has been pitching through some soreness in his shoulder, seemed to steady himself in the next three innings, allowing only one hit.

But the powerful Tigers put together six straight hits during their four-run fifth, with Dirks delivering a two-run double and Cabrera an RBI single to make it 6-2.

Span homered in the sixth, and the Twins had the tying runner at the plate with one out in the eighth. But Benoit struck out Joe Mauer and Willingham to keep the Tigers comfortably in front.

KITTERY, Maine (AP) - Those who have spent time on Navy submarines will tell you that few combustible materials are aboard. But don't tell that to the firefighters who rushed to the USS Miami when a blaze swept through the billion-dollar nuclear-powered submarine.

"It's like going into a chimney," said Portsmouth Naval Shipyard firefighter David Funk, who described insulation and wiring fueling a smoky fire that became hot enough for aluminum to burst into flames.

On Friday, two days after the blaze began, workers at the shipyard finished pumping fresh air into the fire-damaged sub, allowing Navy investigators to enter to begin the first damage assessment. It remains to be seen whether the submarine can be salvaged.

U.S. Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, both members of the Armed Services Committee, visited the shipyard Friday and met with its commander. They thanked a small contingent of firefighters, including Funk, who battled the blaze as the sub's metal hull trapped the heat inside.

Three Navy teams were dispatched to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to investigate the incident, the senators told reporters.

The blaze started early Wednesday night at the shipyard where the sub was being overhauled. A handful of shipyard workers were in the forward compartments where the fire began while the sub was in a dry dock, Collins said.

The fire wasn't extinguished until the next morning. More than 100 firefighters responded from more than a dozen agencies as far away as Groton, Conn., and South Portland.

Eric Wertheim, a U.S. Naval Institute author, characterized the USS Miami fire as a financial disaster, with the potential loss of a submarine that cost $900 million to build, but not a true disaster like the losses of the USS Scorpion and Thresher, nuclear subs that sank during peacetime with a loss of their crews.

"It's important to put it into perspective," Wertheim said. "It could've been a lot worse."

The USS Miami fire damaged the torpedo room, crew quarters and command and control areas in the front of the submarine, but the nuclear propulsion components at the back of the sub weren't harmed.

One defense analyst suggested that the repairs would be so costly that the 22-year-old sub would be scrapped, a scenario that would be similar to the USS Bonefish, a diesel-electric sub decommissioned and scrapped after a fire at sea in 1988.

Vice Adm. Kevin M. McCoy, commander of the Naval Sea Systems Command, told U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe that he's hopeful that the ship can be repaired. He said that many vital components escaped damage because they had been removed for the 20-month overhaul and that salvage parts are available from previously decommissioned Los Angeles-class subs.

"He said, 'We've built submarines, so we can fix them as well,'" said Snowe, who also toured the shipyard Friday.

The intensity of the fire, the lack of lighting, the thick smoke and the metal hull that turned the submarine into an oven all contributed to a difficult blaze for firefighters to extinguish.

Unlike a house fire, there was no way to vent the fire by knocking out windows or using axes to create an opening, and all the smoke billowed from a small number of hatches that firefighters had to use to enter the sub.

"It was pretty intense, a lot of heat, a lot of smoke," Funk said. "It's a steel-hulled vessel. It's basically like going into a chimney into a black void that's superheated and trying to find the seat of the fire and get it put out."

The blaze was so blistering hot that a firefighter could only remain in place for minutes before being replaced by another firefighter, a leap-frogging technique that continued throughout the night until firefighters got the stubborn fire under control.

All told, the firefighters rotated 75 times to battle the fire, using 3 million gallons of water, nearly filling some compartments, Snowe said.

Two members of Funk's fire department were hurt. One had a broken foot, and another had a back injury, he said.

Funk, who left his post at the shipyard on Friday for the first time since the fire started, said he's thankful it wasn't worse.

"It's a miracle that nobody got hurt bad," he said. "Frankly, it's a miracle that nobody got killed."

Ok guys I been taking anti depressants since age 18. To be precise I started with Paxil, stayed about a year or so, then switched over to Prozac, last another year or 2 , then onto Effexor?Effexor lasted a good 5 years, thoughout this time I didnt suffer from near the amount Ive come about to. I never really seen a psychiatrist until recently, as my MD would prescribe as he seemed fit.

Note: Throughout those years I smoked marijuana heavily and also drank heavily. Many times at the same time.

Fast foreward 27 years of age. Recently last summer actually I started to have some hardcore audial hallucinations. It ruined me completely. I was rushed into ER in a psychiatrist clinic as I was having some suicidal thoughts at the time too. I had come to learn I was having symptoms of psychosis. I thought it was because of the Effexor as i read it had so many side-effects including audial hallucinations.

In short words 7-8 months or so later since they prescribed me my new anti depressant called Zoloft at 100 MG per day and Seroquel 3 x 25MG per day, I have reduced drastically in audial hallucinations. Though they still appear at times especially when i think about my problem and have some fear or paranoiia towards it. I also find myself clenching my teeth at these times. They concluded that it could very well be severe anxiety triggering symptoms of psychosis. This is how I feel recently and my psychiatrist said he did not want to alter my medications, he wanted me to go through this group therapy thing much like CBT though they have in house psychiatrists that will prescribe the correct medications as it progresses. A 5 week intensive program. Well I been calling for many days and they still never call me back. So it seems they might be handling some heavy load there.

Question here to some of you uys that experience something similar, what kind of medication is needed to adjust this? I could tell you that i tried more MG once of my anti depressant and noticed a huge reduction in hallucinations.

So now the biggest problem I have is this social phobia, so intense I have closed myself in my room. Left a good paying job last summer so suddenly because of this. Since then I have ignored and secluded myself from family outings and such, friends, clubs, all the things i used to love doing.

I have been clean from alcohol and marijuana since June of last year?.
Have a social therapist i see weekly

so ever since the medication alteration dating back to august 31 , I grown highly social phobic, react very strangely with people as i fear it and get myself paranoid over it.

All in all in short words this is all triggered by my dad. And much of personal and private life matters, including him as the majority of it.

So anything u guys could tell me with similar things?as to good medications to take to whatever could help. Ive opened up to rejoining the gym and perhaps taking some hypnosis sessions?.though at this moment from a medicine stand point?.what do you guys honestly think even though you aren?t doctors?.though people with similar stories or medical background could be a huge relief at this moment as i wait for this therapy thing and well, have certain expectations from it and know abouts. First of all, I suffer from schizophrenia (the negative symptoms of it ? thought disorder, anxiety & depression, as compared to the positive symptoms ? hallucinations and delusions).

If you noticed that your issues were lessened when you were on a higher dose of the anti-depressant, I?d let my psychiatrist know that.

As for blaming all of your issues on your father ? I don?t know the history of your relationship, but often-times people in your situation will pick one person and blame all of their problems on them. Since your father probably isn?t to blame for all of your issues, seeing as part of the problem is biological, I wouldn?t completely blame him and risk damaging your relationship w/ him.

This is all stuff you should be discussing w/ your therapist & psychiatrist. They know how to fix the problem much better than most ppl on Y!A do, but I understand where you?re coming from because I sometimes like to ask mental health questions on here out of desperation.
