SEO Copywriting for a Global International Market

?Do they speak English in Australia??
- Anonymous, United States?

Believe it or not, I was asked this question during my year of student exchange in the United States.

My response:

?Yes, but you?ll have to learn it first.?

Australian English is quite different from American English in terms of pronunciation, vocabulary, spelling and grammar. George Bernard Shaw said it best? ?Two nations separated by a common language?. I openly recall Americans being confused and amused all at once by my Aussie charm. It wasn?t until I had lived here for little over a year and worked in the SEO copywriting field, did I truly realize just how much of a difference there is between the two dialects. Australian spelling is actually somewhat similar to British spelling due to our historical ties with Britain.

Thankfully, technology has made it easier for Australians to pursue a career in the SEO copywriting field in the United States. A hint for all you aspiring Australian copywriters that dare to venture to the United States; the set language, spelling and grammar check features on Microsoft Word are going to be your best buddies. They are sure to have you writing like an American in no time.

If you?re interested in learning more about the dichotomies between Australian and American copy, below are just four of the differences that come to mind.

FYI: This gave my spell check a seizure!

A Love Affair with ?u?

Australian English believes in the preservation of the letter ?u?. Although there is no real justifiable reason, we prefer to retain the letter ?u? in certain copy such as honour, favour, colour and labour. On the other hand, Americans prefer to omit the letter ?u? to read as honor, favor, color and labor.

?re? over ?er?

The look of certain words in Australian copy can come across as sophisticated?perhaps because of our historical ties to the Queen of Great Britain. Don?t be fooled. Aussies are far from classy. We simply fancy the ending ?re? over ?er?. Take, for instance, the words theatre, centre and kilometre. On the other hand, Americans prefer the ending ?er? to read as theater, center and kilometer.

Exile the ?z?

In Australian English, the ?ise? ending is used in copy such as organise, realise and jeopardise. On the other hand, Americans prefer the ending ?ize? to read as organize, realize and jeopardize. As an SEO copywriter, one phrase I definitely need to know how to spell correctly is search engine optimization. Fun fact: I was actually about to submit my application for the SEO copywriter job opening at Optimum7 with the word optimisation on the cover letter. Lucky for me, my significant other is American and was able to pick up on it before I hit the submit button.

?t? over ?ed?

Another fun fact: During the daunting process of job hunting, my partner was kind enough to review my resume for me. ?Learnt? Oh that is so country!? No offense to all you countrysiders out there. Little did we know, Australian English opts for ?t? over ?ed? to form learnt and dreamt while American English prefers the ending ?ed? to read learned and dreamed.

Why is this Important for SEO Copywriters?

Once the Internet was born, the space-time continuum collapsed and globalization pierced the foundation of our being. People from all corners of the world were now able to facilitate exchanges in real time. This led to the emergence of an online global market. As an SEO copywriter, it?s important to be aware of the subtle differences within the English language. Why? Let?s face it. Nothing in life is for certain. One day you may be expected to write for an English speaking audience in a different country?and I?m living proof of it.

While it?s true that the variations in the English language become even more of a consideration if your clients are global, it?s also important to keep in mind that even if your clients are local, your client?s clients may be scattered throughout the globe. If that?s the case, which English do you use in your web copy? It may seem like an insignificant matter, but some readers can be very picky. You?ll just have to be ruthless and distinguish which of your client?s English speaking audiences delivers the greatest revenue, and cater to them. After all, at the end of the day, business is all about profit.

If your client or your client?s clients are international, it would be a wise idea to first approach your client to clarify which variety of English they are more comfortable reading. If you fail to do this, it may not resonate with the target audience, and may even be inconsistent with their preexisting material. Don?t waste your time on local colloquialism or slang either as it runs the risk of turning your readers off from the content. It?s also a great idea to provide conversions as inches, miles, pounds, gallons and Fahrenheit mean nothing to someone who has grown up with centimetres, kilometres, kilograms, litres and Celsius. Lastly, be careful of the date format. Date your articles and correspondence with your clients using the correct format. In the United States, the correct format is MM/DD/YYYY. In Australia, the correct format is DD/MM/YYYY.

If you can provide prospective clients with a genuine understanding of the nuances of the English language, you?re more likely to secure them as a paying client. After all, words are our income. Make sure you sit down and discuss the specifics of which spelling and grammar you?ll use for what project.

The Implications for Search Engine Optimization

Let?s recap. So far we?ve dissected the different shades and tones of Australian and American English. We?ve also discussed the importance for SEO copywriting and pleasing target audiences.

So, what about the search engines? SEO copywriting isn?t just about pleasing your target audience; it?s also about pleasing the search engines, right? So what do you do when half of your audience are searching for honour, theatre, organistion? and learnt while the other half of your audience are searching for honor, theater, organization and learned?

You not only have to worry about how different traffic reacts to your copy but also what implications does this have for what kind of traffic you attract, and from where? If you?re a multinational, the simple answer would be to create localized domains for Australia and America and optimize for both. Unfortunately, that?s when all the duplicate content issues arise. Google may penalize you for having duplicate content, and this of course, will harm your search engine rankings.

Stay tuned for more information on how to handle this delicate situation?

Initial genetic analysis reveals Ice Man, ?tzi, predisposed to cardiovascular disease

ScienceDaily (Feb. 28, 2012) ? In a paper appearing in Nature Communications, researchers report new findings about physiognomy, ethnic origin and predisposition towards illness of the world's oldest glacier mummy.

Roughly 18 months ago, a team of scientists succeeded in decoding the full genome of ?tzi, the mummified Iceman, revealing his entire genetic make-up. Thus the course was set for solving further mysteries surrounding the world's oldest glacier mummy. And now the next milestone has been reached: researchers from the Institute for Mummies and the Iceman at the European Academy of Bolzano/Bozen (EURAC), and from the Institutes for Human Genetics at the University of T?bingen and Saarland University have analysed various aspects of the raw data gained from the DNA sequencing.

?tzi was genetically predisposed to cardiovascular diseases, according to recent studies carried out by the team of scientists working with Albert Zink and Angela Graefen from Bolzano's EURAC Institute for Mummies and the Iceman, Carsten Pusch and Nikolaus Blin from the Institute for Human Genetics at the University of T?bingen, along with Andreas Keller and Eckart Meese from the Institute of Human Genetics at Saarland University. Not only was this genetic predisposition demonstrable in the 5,000-year-old ice mummy, there was also already a symptom in the form of arteriosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. And yet, in his lifetime, ?tzi was not exposed to the risk factors which we consider today to be the significant triggers of cardiovascular disease. He was not overweight and no stranger to exercise.

"The evidence that such a genetic predisposition already existed in ?tzi's lifetime is of huge interest to us. It indicates that cardiovascular disease is by no means an illness chiefly associated with modern lifestyles. We are now eager to use these data to help us explore further how these diseases developed," says anthropologist Albert Zink with bioinformatics expert Andreas Keller.

Apart from this genetic predisposition, the scientists were able to identify traces of bacteria from the genus Borrelia, which are responsible for causing infections and are transmitted by ticks. Carsten Pusch, who led the genetic investigations in T?bingen, comments: "This is the oldest evidence for borreliosis (Lyme disease) and proof that this infection was already present 5,000 years ago."

One further aspect which particularly interested the scientists was the Iceman's genetic. They found that ?tzi belonged to a particular so-called Y-chromosome haplogroup which is relatively rare in present-day Europe. The findings indicate that ?tzi's ancestors had migrated from the Middle East as agriculture and cattle-breeding became more widespread. Their genetic heritage is most common today in geographically isolated areas and islands such as on Sardinia and Corsica.

The genetic investigations also revealed a wealth of further information facts about the physical appearance of the Iceman: he had brown eyes, brown hair, and suffered from lactose intolerance which meant he could not digest milk products. This finding supports the theory that, despite the increasing spread of agriculture and dairying, lactose intolerance was still common in ?tzi's lifetime. The ability to digest milk throughout adulthood developed steadily over the next millennia alongside the domestication of animals. The full genome sequencing was supported by the National Geographic Society (USA), by Life Technologies (USA) and Comprehensive Biomarker Center (Germany).

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

The steam shower has revolutionised our lifestyles giving us the ability to simply take a refreshing shower or enjoy the wonderful features that come readily integrated within each enclosure.

The steam shower may seem relatively new to our society but the concept dates back to ancient times when Europe was dominated by the Romans. In these periods the steam bath was the main method for reviving, relaxing and rejuvenating the body. Today the steam shower has become an amazing appliance that is eagerly dreamed of by most home owners looking to enjoy the luxurious wonders of the spa.

The variety of steam shower cubicles readily available with bathroom suppliers is inspiring. Although the designs vary greatly, each enclosure comes fitted with a vast selection of features that range from television, radio and telephone to chromo-therapy and LED lighting and much, much more.

Before proceeding with buying a steam shower you must first ensure you have adequate space for assembling and fitting the cubicle. Although the dimensions may be apparent to fit your bathroom you do need additional room for assembling the cubicle. Another important dimension is the room required for opening the cubicle doors. Many people realise this important factor when it is too late and then find that they do not have the room to open the shower cubicle doors. If this could be a problem try to purchase a shower cabin that features either bi-fold doors or better still sliding doors.

The whole concept of the steam shower is to enable you to enjoy a truly rewarding experience every time you shower. Not only this, but utilise the wonderful health benefits that are included within the enclosure. The reason why the steam shower was created was specifically to help our bodies relax and this combined with the steam generator, body massage jets, foot and calf massager, mood enhancement lighting etc. allows the body to receive the very best in health therapy. The amount of benefits offered by the steam shower is amazing, from purifying the skin and increasing the flow of blood to relaxation and relieving aches and pains, the list is almost endless.

The Epic Tale Of Full Body Massage (Part 1) ? Secrets Revealed ...

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Imagine your muscles stroked methodically, kneaded like a piece of dough ready to be baked ? that?is a full body massage. Regular massage therapy can contribute to a number of physical, mental and metaphysical benefits, but the most basic and obvious would be relaxation. However, you may not be aware of its other benefits, which is why we wrote this quick missive on massage. Aside from the physical benefits of massage which can greatly help to reduce pain and inflammation in some parts of the body, it is also beneficial for your mental health because it helps reduce stress and anxiety. Stress and anxiety are a tag team of sorts that could wreak havoc on your body if you don?t find a way to relieve it somehow!

Did you know that stress-related disorders are the basis for between 80 and 90 percent of the complaints that people visit their family physicians about? Human touch is a one of the best methods involved in the healing process, but the problem is, it?s not a method commonly practiced in modern medicine. A natural human instinct is to reach out to another person when you?re feeling overwhelmed. Just like most other individuals, chances are you need something, or someone to vent out to, a way for you to let out every bit of anxiety in your system. Invariably, you would turn to a family member or friend, but that doesn?t always make things better at the end of the day, right? Actually, one of the complaints heard frequently by massage therapists is that physicians don?t touch their patients any more.

Nursing and massage once had much affinity with each other ? bet you probably didn?t realize that. Apparently, there used to be a much higher level of personal care with a lot more touch involved ? wellness expressed through massage. But this is not the case in modern times, as the typical nurse would have just about as much on his/her table as the typical doctor ? blame the worldwide shortage of nurses for this turn of events. The nurses of the 21st century are too preoccupied doing ?doctor things? such as writing charts or attending to medical concerns, and when they aren?t doing that, they would be dealing with their patients? insurance companies. There isn?t, and hasn?t been, much opportunity for nurses give their patients massages for some time. Some believe that massage is crucial to the healing process and not only in a hospital atmosphere either.

Massages in general and specifically full body massages, have become increasingly popular over the years. The art of massage is piquing the interest of more and more people, who now make it a point to get a regular massage from time to time. These people are definitely fortunate ? compared to their brethren who are way too busy with their everyday lives to get a massage, they are less stressed and generally free of anxiety and tension. Massage may be good for you physically, but we should never underestimate the mental aspect of things.

If you haven?t tried a full body massage, it is highly recommended that you do. It?s a great way to get started on a path to healthier living and reaping the all of the benefits that a massage has to offer. Come on, you have everything to gain and nothing to lose, so what are you waiting for?

When it?s time for your next dentist buckhead visit, give us a call.

Investing in Alabama Real Estate | Michigan Mobile Homes

Alabama is unquestionably a stereotypical southern state, however the state and real estate market hold unquestionable surprises.

Alabama
Alabama is noticeably southern and darn proud of it. When you have a preference for college football, country music as well as NASCAR, Alabama is a paradise defined. To the surprise of the many, Alabama even offers a modern-day flavor having Huntsville being the house of an important chunk of the U. S. Space System.?

For golf players, the variety of golf courses winding in the state, also known as the Robert Trent Jones golf trail, make Alabama on the list of top golf destinations in the continental Usa. Personally, I prefer the annual iron bowl university football battle between the Auburn and Alabama colleges, however to each their own?

Huntsville
Home for the U. S. Space and Rocket Center, Huntsville is certainly the pyrotechnic capital of the south. With a distinct southern charm, the town is laid out well with parks, botanical gardens, lake areas and a close proximity to numerous outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking and hunting. While numerous cities come up with a haberdash of mixing in the new with the old, Huntsville makes it perfectly.
Mobile
Evident ?Moe beel?, Mobile is a busy dock city which has a little recognized history. If you?ve ever regarded going to Mardi Gras in New Orleans, you?re far better off visiting Mobile. Yes, the city was the first to commemorate Mardi Gras in the US and preserves the tradition to this day.?

In truth, Mobile seems to be striking like New Orleans, having been established by the French. It is just a lovely southern city, with spring being the best time for a bevy of flowing vegetation awaken from their winter sleep. The colours and fragrances are merely incredible.

Working with local agents such as panama real estate assist with a real estate transaction tends to make the process less difficult. Visit estate agents amesbury or panama real estate

Alabama Real estate
Alabama real-estate prices are affordable when compared with the rest of the country. Through the entire state, a normal house will run you $200, 000 or maybe less. The appreciation rate is often a little lower, but still a good 7.5 percent for 2005.

Improving Profits With Real Estate Opportunities | SemOifc

As Mark Twain said, ?Buy land. They?re not making it anymore.? Land offers a safe investment opportunity due to its limited nature. This applies to real estate in general.
Investing shrewdly in real estate is one of the smartest ways of generating income. Although there are the occasional scenarios where slumps occur, the real estate market still remains one of the most reliable investment markets in the world. You need only compare the value of a property 50 years ago to what it is now to realize that choosing real estate as a vehicle for your long-term investment is a safe way of enjoying high returns with marginal risk. Still, the best way of making the right decisions in real estate is taking the time to learn more about the way real estate investing operates.
Home Builders in Iowa
Investing in real estate offers a steady growth because its value increases proportionate to inflation. This is due to the fact that rent, which is the main source of income from real estate, is tied to the inflation rate. This is especially beneficial to the property holder when the high cost of homes force many to opt for rented homes. The demand for rentals increases, securing a steady tenancy and putting rental rates in the landlord?s hands. When you consider that mortgage payments remain steady and income from the rented property continues to rise with inflation, it gives a win-win scenario to real estate investors. If the rental rates climb and interest rates, home prices, and mortgage costs drop, people with enough savings to cover the initial purchase cost of a home may opt out of renting and purchase.
Your real estate investment does not have to be personally funded by your resources. Most ventures in the real estate market can be entered with very little initial outlay. Banks can loan you the money to purchase real estate. If you opt for longer term mortgages, you will be able to make monthly payments you can afford or that the rent covers.
The majority of financial institutions are willing to lend money to people who want to invest in real estate because the property represents attractive collateral. If you do not carry out your end of the contract, the bank can seize the property. At least half of the property?s worth can be funded by a bank or other lending agency.
One of the biggest myth related to real estate is that you should never invest in property when the market is at a low point. The exact opposite is the case. It is always wise to purchase real estate in times of economic recession. Be on the lookout for good deals during a market slump. Purchase properties when the prices are low. When real estate is hot and prices have skyrocketed, stay out. It is best to keep in mind the old saying that there is a time for every purpose when you are considering an investment.
In buying properties, you will naturally look for those in good locations with potential for long-term growth in value. If you purchase such a property, be prepared to keep it until the market increases. Holding on to properties in hopes of long-term gains has the potential to be risky if the bottom drops out of the market in the unforeseeable future. Some investors prefer to rent the property out or flip it as soon as possible.
Owning real property is often only the first step in real estate investment. You will need to make improvements and repairs, manage the renters, and be prepared to sell if the market mandates it if you want to maximize your profits.
Be sure to analyze all relevant factors when considering an investment in real estate. Do not allow your emotions to rule your choices. Instead, pay attention to crucial factors such as market trends, rental yields, and current market value of a property before moving ahead with your decision. You might not become the next Donald Trump, but careful planning and judicious investing should head you in the right direction.

First ultraluminous source in Andromeda galaxy unmasked as 'normal' stellar mass black hole

ScienceDaily (Feb. 23, 2012) ? Detailed observations show that the first ultraluminous X-ray source detected in our neighbouring Andromeda galaxy is due to a stellar mass black hole swallowing material at very high rates. An international team of astronomers, including scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, have now published their findings in two papers. The emission of the ultraluminous source probably originates from a system similar to X-ray binaries in our galaxy with matter accreting onto a black hole, which is at least 13 times more massive than our Sun. Unlike X-ray binaries in our own Milky Way, however, this source is much less obscured by interstellar gas and dust, allowing detailed investigations also at low X-ray energies.

Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULX) represent a contentious set of objects, which emit at remarkably high luminosities. They can be found in both the nearby and the distant Universe, where they are seen in the outer regions of galaxies (see note 1). As they are fairly rare, with usually only one or two ULX in one galaxy - if they are present at all ? the sparse data available to astronomers gave rise to two competing explanations for their high luminosities: Either a stellar mass black holes (see note 2) is accreting at extreme rates or there is a new sub-species of intermediate mass black holes (IMBH ? see note 3) accreting at lower rates. One of the greatest difficulties in attempting to find the right answer is the large distance to these objects, which makes detailed observations difficult or even impossible.

Two research teams now report on observations of an unusual X-ray transient light source in Andromeda (M31), our nearest big neighbour galaxy at a distance of ?only? some two million light-years. Andromeda is monitored on a regular basis by the X-ray satellite observatories Chandra and XMM-Newton as part of an on-going campaign led by scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics. First detected in late 2009 by Chandra, the new object was immediately classified as a low luminosity ULX by the MPE researchers, even though initially it was more luminous than the total X-ray luminosity of the Andromeda galaxy. This is therefore not only the first ULX in this spiral galaxy but also the closest ULX ever observed. Follow-up observations with the Swift and HST satellites yielded important complementary data for this remarkable ULX.

?We were very lucky that we caught the ULX early enough to see most of its lightcurve, which showed a very similar behaviour to other X-ray sources from our own galaxy,? explains Wolfgang Pietsch from the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics. The emission decayed exponentially with a characteristic timescale of about one month, which is a common property of stellar mass X-ray binaries. ?This means that the ULX in Andromeda likely contains a normal, stellar black hole swallowing material at very high rates.?

Another indication about the physical processes around the black hole comes from the changing shape of the X-ray spectrum as the emission decays. This could mean that the high luminosities involved cause the inner regions to expand outwards into a ?photosphere?. Alternatively, we could have a much clearer view to this source compared to other sources in our own galaxy. In either case, this is the first time that a lower luminosity ULX is linked unambiguously to a stellar mass black hole at least 13 times more massive than our Sun.

Ideally, the astronomers would like to replicate these findings by re-observing the source in another outburst. However, if it is indeed analogous to the X-ray binaries in our own Milky Way, astronomers may be in for a long wait: such outbursts occur on the order of decades. On the other hand, as there are so many X-ray binaries in the Andromeda galaxy, another similar outbursting source could be captured any time by the on-going monitoring campaign. While ?monitoring? may not sound exciting, the current results show that such programmes are often blessed with discovery and lead to breakthroughs ? in particular, if they are augmented with deep and sustained follow-up.

Renting Tools For Your Home Improvement Project ? Club Penguin ...

If you are contemplating a one time home improvement project that you intend to undertake on your own, you may be wondering how you can save money on the tools that you will need for your project. If you are contemplating only one project, you likely would prefer not to have to invest a great deal of money in the purchase of tools for that endeavor.

In point of fact, there are options available to you short of running out and making the purchase of tools for a one time home improvement project. For example, rather than investing a significant amount of money in the purchase of tools for your home improvement project, you might want to give serious consideration to renting the tools that you will need for that endeavor.

In the 21st century, there are a number of different rental options available to a person who is looking for tools to undertake a one time home improvement project. There are resources available to a person looking to do some home improvement work in both the brick and mortar world and on the Internet and World Wide Web.

In the proverbial real world, there are companies or businesses in many cities and communities the world over that specialize particularly in renting equipment, including tools, to people who are interested in undertaking home improvement projects. Many of these businesses will rent tools and equipment to a person interested in doing a home improvement project for either a short or a long term.

In addition to stores or shops in the brick and mortar world that specialize in renting tools and equipment, many home improvement centers now offer these types of products for rent as well as for sale. (Again, many people are involved in one time home improvement projects. Therefore, it makes more sense for these people to rent tools and equipment for the one time project rather than make the purchase of these items that they will not be using again in the future.)

Once again, if you are contemplating starting a home improvement project, consider renting tools, equipment and related items for your endeavor. In the end, you likely will be able to save a great deal of money on your one time home improvement project if you do rent tools and equipment rather than make a purchase of these items that you will not be using again in the future.

Breaking: Grubb Files Bankruptcy, Sells All Assets to BGC Partners ...

February 21, 2012
By Nicholas Ziegler, News Editor

BGC Partners Inc., an intermediary firm to global financial markets, has just purchased ?substantially all assets? of troubled commercial real estate services firm Grubb & Ellis Inc., Commercial Property Executive has learned. BGC already owns Newmark Knight Frank, another large player in the CRE services world.

Thomas D?Arcy, president & CEO of Grubb, said in a statement that he expects the transition to be ?seamless for our clients, and we expect no disruption to the company?s options.? He went on to note that BGC both purchased Grubb?s senior debt and will be providing incremental financing to ?ensure the smooth execution of the sale.?

A source familiar with the matter told CPE that the senior debt ? which was formerly held by NYC-based C-III Capital Partners and Colony Capital L.L.C., who had an exclusive timeframe to make an offer for Grubb ? was acquired for $25 million. However, with the deal?s structure, the remaining debt, including common stock and past-due invoices, will likely be wiped out. Additionally, BGC will have final approval power on all outstanding invoices.

Grubb & Ellis has been facing a hard few months. In December, Commercial Property Executive learned that at least 24 workers were furloughed just before Thanksgiving ? and that the real estate services firm was actively seeking a buyer and the was undergoing a review process with Capital Partners and Colony Capital. The exclusivity on that process, which allowed C-III to make an offer for Grubb, expired in mid-January of this year.

On Jan. 9, CPE reported that the NYSE de-listed Grubb for falling below $15 million in average global market cap over a 30-day period. At that point, the firm began trading on the OTCQB marketplace operated by OTC Markets Group.

Grubb intends to begin its own sale to BGC as an asset sale under section 363 of the bankruptcy code, allowing for a free-and-clear transaction that does not require competing assets or sales to complete, expediting the transition. BGC has committed to provide Grubb with debtor-in-possession financing to support the company?s operations throughout the sale process.? Following court approval, the DIP financing, combined with funds generated by the company?s ongoing operations, will be used to support the business through the consummation of the sale.

While it remains to be seen how BGC integrates the platforms of both Grubb and Newmark, D?Arcy noted that ?our professionals and clients will benefit greatly by being part of the BGC organization, which, with its recent acquisition of Newmark Knight Frank, will bring together two strong brands to create a powerhouse in the commercial real estate space.?

Check back with CPE for more as this story develops.

(AP) ? The mayor and police director of New Jersey's largest city said Wednesday the New York Police Department misled their city and never told them it was conducting a widespread spying operation on Newark's Muslim neighborhoods. Had they known, they said, they never would have allowed it.

"If anyone in my police department had known this was a blanket investigation of individuals based on nothing but their religion, that strikes at the core of our beliefs and my beliefs very personally, and it would have merited a far sterner response," Newark Mayor Cory Booker said.

In mid-2007, the NYPD's secretive Demographics Unit fanned out across Newark, photographing every mosque and eavesdropping in Muslim businesses. The findings were cataloged in a 60-page report, obtained by The Associated Press, that served as a police guidebook to Newark's Muslims. There was no mention of terrorism or any criminal wrongdoing.

Officials reacted strongly on Wednesday.

"It is deeply offensive to me to do blanket surveillance for no reason other than religious affiliation," said Booker, who called on his state's attorney general to investigate.

Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio, who was deputy chief of the department at the time, said the NYPD asked to be shown around the city. New York police said it was part of an investigation but never revealed what it was about, DeMaio said.

"We really want to be clear: This type of activity is not what the Newark PD would ever do," he said.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who was the top federal prosecutor in the state in 2007, said he didn't remember the NYPD ever approaching him about surveillance in the city or a threat that would justify it. He called the Newark report "disturbing" and said Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa was looking into the report.

"The NYPD has at times developed a reputation of asking forgiveness rather than permission," he said.

Such surveillance has become common in New York City in the decade since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Nearly 3,000 Americans died when al-Qaida terrorists hijacked airliners and flew them into the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon near Washington and a field where one crashed in Pennsylvania.

Police have built databases showing where Muslims live, where they buy groceries, what Internet cafes they use and where they watch sports. Dozens of mosques and student groups have been infiltrated, and police have built detailed profiles of local ethnic groups, from Moroccans to Egyptians to Albanians.

But the NYPD's intelligence unit also operates far outside its jurisdiction and has worked to keep tabs on Muslims across the Northeast. The department has cataloged Muslim communities in Long Island, conducted undercover operations in New Brunswick, N.J., and has turned often innocuous Internet postings by Muslim student groups into police files.

The monitoring of Muslim college students across the Northeast drew sharp rebukes from administrators at Yale, Columbia and elsewhere earlier this week. But New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg issued his most vigorous defense of his police department to date.

"The police department goes where there are allegations. And they look to see whether those allegations are true," he told reporters Tuesday. "That's what you'd expect them to do. That's what you'd want them to do. Remind yourself when you turn out the light tonight."

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne did not respond to a message seeking comment on the Newark effort Wednesday. He has previously denied the existence of the Demographics Unit.

The documents obtained by the AP show, for the first time in any detail, how the NYPD's intelligence-gathering efforts stretched outside the department's jurisdiction. New Jersey and Long Island residents had no reason to suspect the NYPD was watching them. And the department is not accountable to their votes or tax dollars.

NYPD conducted similar operations in Suffolk and Nassau counties on suburban Long Island, according to police records. The NYPD frequently operates outside its jurisdiction without telling federal or local officials.

The report left Newark Muslims grasping for explanations as they saw pictures of their mosques and businesses in police files.

"All of these are innocent people," Nagiba el-Sioufi of Newark said recently while her husband, Mohammed, flipped through the NYPD report.

Egyptian immigrants and American citizens, the couple raised two daughters in the United States. Mohammed works as an accountant and is vice president of the Islamic Culture Center, a mosque a few blocks from Newark City Hall.

"If you have an accusation on us, then spend the money on doing this to us," Nagiba said. "But you have no accusation."

The Newark police director at the time, Garry McCarthy, is now in charge of the Chicago Police Department. He said the NYPD initiated the operation and none of his officers participated.

Newark authorities who investigated how the NYPD operation was carried out concluded McCarthy received the 60-page report from the NYPD, according to a Newark official. The official, who insisted on anonymity because the inquiry was ongoing, said there was no evidence that McCarthy circulated the report to anyone else.

The goal of the report, like others the Demographics Unit compiled, was to give police at-their-fingertips access to information about Muslim neighborhoods. If police got a tip about an Egyptian terrorist in the area, for instance, they wanted to immediately know where he was likely to find a cheap room to rent, where he might buy his lunch and at what mosque he might attend Friday prayers.

"These locations provide the maximum ability to assess the general opinions and general activity of these communities," the NYPD Newark report said.

The effect of the program was that hundreds of American citizens were cataloged ? sometimes by name, sometimes simply by their businesses and their ethnicity ? in secret police files that spanned hundreds of pages:

? "A Black Muslim male named Mussa was working in the rear of store," an NYPD detective wrote after a clandestine visit to a dollar store in Shirley, N.Y., on Long Island.

? "The manager of this restaurant is an Indian Muslim male named Vicky Amin" was the report back from an Indian restaurant in Lindenhurst, N.Y., also on Long Island.

? "Owned and operated by an African Muslim (possibly Sudanese) male named Abdullah Ddita," was the summary from another dollar store in Shirley, N.Y., just off the highway on the way to the Hamptons, the wealthy Long Island getaway.

In one report, an officer describes how he put people at ease by speaking in Punjabi and Urdu, languages commonly spoken in Pakistan.

There are no allegations of terrorism in the Demographics Unit reports, and the documents make clear that police were interested only in locations frequented by Muslims. The canvass of businesses in Newark mentions Islam and Muslims 27 times. In one section of the report, police wrote that the largest immigrant groups in Newark were from Portugal and Brazil. But they did not photograph businesses or churches for those groups.

"No Muslim component within these communities was identified," police wrote, except for one business owned by a Brazilian Muslim of Palestinian descent.

Polls show that most New Yorkers strongly support the NYPD's counterterrorism efforts and don't believe police unfairly target Muslims. Civil rights groups and Muslim activists, however, have called for Police Commissioner Ray Kelly's resignation over the spying and the department's screening of a video that portrays Muslims as wanting to dominate the United States.

In Newark, the report was met with a mixture of confusion and anger.

"Come, look at yourself on film," Abdul Kareem Abdullah called to his wife as he flipped through the NYPD files at the lunch counter of their restaurant, Hamidah's Cafe.

An American-born citizen who converted to Islam decades ago, Abdullah said he understands why, after the 9/11 terror attacks, people are afraid of Muslims. But he said he wishes the police would stop by, say hello, meet him and his customers and get to know them. The documents show police have no interest in that, he said.

"They just want to keep tabs on us," he said. "If they really wanted to understand, they'd come talk to us."

Newark Mayor Booker met with Islamic leaders while campaigning for his post. Those interviewed by the AP said they wanted to believe he didn't authorize the spying but wanted to hear from him directly.

"I have to look in his eyes," Mohammed el-Sioufi said at his mosque. "I know him. I met him. He was here."

Because officers conducted the operation covertly, the reports contain mistakes that could have been corrected had the officers talked to store owners or imams. If police ever had to rely on the database during an unfolding terrorism emergency as they had planned, those errors would have hindered their efforts.

For instance, locals said several businesses identified as belonging to African-American Muslims actually were owned by Afghans or Pakistanis. El-Sioufi's mosque is listed as an African-American mosque, but he said the imam is from Egypt and the congregation is a roughly even mix of black converts and people of foreign ancestries.

"We're not trying to hide anything. We are out in the open," said Abdul A. Muhammad, the imam of the Masjid Ali Muslim mosque in Newark. "You want to come in? We have an open door policy."

By choosing instead to conduct such widespread surveillance, Mohammed el-Sioufi said, police send the message that the whole community is suspect.

"When you spy on someone, you are kind of accusing them. You are not accepting them for choosing Islam," Nagiba el-Sioufi said. "This doesn't say, 'This guy did something wrong.' This says, 'Everyone here is a Muslim.'"

"It makes you feel uncomfortable, like this is not your country," she added. "This is our country."
