Blasts, beheadings? Stats show a peaceful world

It seems as if violence is everywhere, but it's really on the run.

Yes, thousands of people have died in bloody unrest from Africa to Pakistan, while terrorists plot bombings and kidnappings. Wars drag on in Iraq and Afghanistan. In peaceful Norway, a man massacred 69 youths in July. In Mexico, headless bodies turn up, victims of drug cartels. This month eight people died in a shooting in a California hair salon.

Yet, historically, we've never had it this peaceful.

That's the thesis of three new books, including one by prominent Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker. Statistics reveal dramatic reductions in war deaths, family violence, racism, rape, murder and all sorts of mayhem.

In his book, Pinker writes: "The decline of violence may be the most significant and least appreciated development in the history of our species."

And it runs counter to what the mass media is reporting and essentially what we feel in our guts.

Bloody anecdotes
Pinker and other experts say the reality is not painted in bloody anecdotes, but demonstrated in the black and white of spreadsheets and historical documents. They tell a story of a world moving away from violence.

In his new book, "The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined," Pinker makes the case that a smarter, more educated world is becoming more peaceful in several statistically significant ways. His findings are based on peer-reviewed studies published by other academics using examinations of graveyards, surveys and historical records:

  • The number of people killed in battle ? calculated per 100,000 population ? has dropped by 1,000-fold over the centuries as civilizations evolved. Before there were organized countries, battles killed on average more than 500 out of every 100,000 people. In 19th century France, it was 70. In the 20th century with two world wars and a few genocides, it was 60. Now battlefield deaths are down to three-tenths of a person per 100,000.
  • The rate of genocide deaths per world population was 1,400 times higher in 1942 than in 2008.
  • There were fewer than 20 democracies in 1946. Now there are close to 100. Meanwhile, the number of authoritarian countries has dropped from a high of almost 90 in 1976 to about 25 now.

Pinker says one of the main reasons for the drop in violence is that we are smarter. IQ tests show that the average teenager is smarter with each generation. The tests are constantly adjusted to keep average at 100, and a teenager who now would score a 100 would have scored a 118 in 1950 and a 130 in 1910. So this year's average kid would have been a near-genius a century ago. And that increase in intelligence translates into a kinder, gentler world, Pinker says.

"As we get smarter, we try to think up better ways of getting everyone to turn their swords into plowshares at the same time," Pinker said in an interview. "Human life has become more precious than it used to be."

Pinker argued his case in a commentary this past week in the scientific journal Nature. He has plenty of charts and graphs to back up his claims, including evidence beyond wartime deaths ? evidence that our everyday lives are also less violent:

  • Murder in European countries has steadily fallen from near 100 per 100,000 people in the 14th and 15th centuries to about 1 per 100,000 people now.
  • Murder within families. The U.S. rate of husbands being killed by their wives has dropped from 1.2 per 100,000 in 1976 to just 0.2. For wives killed by their husbands, the rate has slipped from 1.4 to 0.8 over the same time period.
  • Rape in the United States is down 80 percent since 1973. Lynchings, which used to occur at a rate of 150 a year, have disappeared.
  • Discrimination against blacks and gays is down, as is capital punishment, the spanking of children, and child abuse.

But if numbers are too inaccessible, Pinker is more than happy to provide the gory stories illustrating our past violence. "It is easy to forget how dangerous life used to be, how deeply brutality was once woven into the fabric of daily existence," Pinker writes in his book.

Fairy tales
He examines body counts, rapes, sacrifice and slavery in the Bible, using an estimate of 1.2 million deaths detailed in the Old Testament. He describes forms of torture used in the Middle Ages and even notes the nastiness behind early day fairy tales, such as the evil queen's four gruesome methods for killing Snow White along with a desire to eat her lungs and liver.

Even when you add in terrorism, the world is still far less violent, Pinker says.

"Terrorism doesn't account for many deaths. Sept. 11 was just off the scale. There was never a terrorist attack before or after that had as many deaths. What it does is generate fear," he said.

It's hard for many people to buy the decline in violence. Even those who deal in peace for a living at first couldn't believe it when the first academics started counting up battle deaths and recognized the trends.

In 1998, Andrew Mack, then head of strategic planning for U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan, said a look at the statistics showed the world was becoming less violent. The reaction from his professional peacekeeping colleagues?

"Pffft, it's not true," they told Mack, arguing that the 1990s had to be the worst decade in U.N. history. It wasn't even close.

'Hard message'
Joshua Goldstein, a professor of international relations at American University and author of "Winning the War on War," has also been telling the same story as Pinker, but from a foreign policy point of view. At each speech he gives, people bring up America's lengthy wars in the Middle East. "It's been a hard message to get through," he acknowledged.

"We see the atrocities and they are atrocious," Goldstein said. "The blood is going to be just as red on the television screens."

Mack, who's now with Simon Fraser University in Canada, credits the messy, inefficient and heavily political peacekeeping process at the U.N., the World Bank and thousands of non-governmental organizations for helping curb violence.

The "Human Security Report 2009/2010," a project led by Mack and funded by several governments, is a worldwide examination of war and violence and has been published as a book. It cites jarringly low numbers. While the number of wars has increased by 25 percent, they've been minor ones.

The average annual battle death toll has dropped from nearly 10,000 per conflict in the 1950s to less than 1,000 in the 21st century. And the number of deadliest wars ? those that kill at least 1,000 people a year ? has fallen by 78 percent since 1988.

Cultural changes
Mack and Goldstein emphasize how hard society and peacekeepers have worked to reduce wars, focusing on action taken to tamp down violence, while Pinker focuses on cultural and thought changes that make violence less likely. But all three say those elements are interconnected.

Even the academics who disagree with Pinker, Goldstein and Mack, say the declining violence numbers are real.

"The facts are not in dispute here; the question is what is going on," John Mearsheimer, a professor of political science at the University of Chicago and author of "The Tragedy of Great Power Politics."

"It's been 21 years since the Cold War ended and the United States has been at war for 14 out of those 21 years," Mearsheimer said. "If war has been burned out of the system, why do we have NATO and why has NATO been pushed eastward...? Why are we spending more money on defense than all other countries in the world put together?"

What's happening is that the U.S. is acting as a "pacifier" keeping the peace all over the world, Mearsheimer said. He said like-minded thinkers, who call themselves "realists" believe "that power matters because the best way to survive is to be really powerful." And he worries that a strengthening China is about to upset the world power picture and may make the planet bloodier again.

And Goldstein points out that even though a nuclear attack hasn't occurred in 66 years ? one nuclear bomb could change this trend in an instant.

Pinker said looking at the statistics and how violent our past was and how it is less so now, "makes me appreciate things like democracy, the United Nations, like literacy."

He and Goldstein believe it's possible that an even greater drop in violence could occur in the future.

Goldstein says there's a turn on a clich? that is apt: "We're actually going from the fire to the frying pan. And that's progress. It's not as bad as the fire."

Judge: Texas court break-in may have been prank (AP)

SAN ANTONIO ? Five foreign nationals travelling the country in a rented RV broke into a San Antonio courthouse early Wednesday, authorities said, triggering a heavy police response that closed downtown streets and summoned the FBI before officials suggested the men may just be harmless pranksters.

Some of the men, all in their 20s, wore sombreros and seemed to wield a gavel while running through the courthouse before getting caught, Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff said. Authorities said they had no weapons and didn't immediately appear dangerous.

The identities or nationalities of the men weren't immediately released, but officials found 90-day visas in their rented RV. Bexar County Sheriff Amadeo Ortiz said some of them arrived in New York last month and drove the vehicle to Florida, where the others joined them.

"It's just very strange," Wolff said. "If it was some kids in the neighborhood, you'd think it was a prank."

Authorities said the men, who were expected to be charged with burglary, spoke little English but were cooperating with authorities through the help of a translator.

Wolff chuckled at times while describing what may have been a prank, which apparently began with some of the group entering the courthouse through a fire escape. Three of the men were caught inside, and two were outside near the RV.

The mood was far more serious around the Bexar County Courthouse when police arrested the men about 1:30 a.m. Officers called in bomb-sniffing dogs, FBI agents were brought to the scene, and downtown streets were blocked off.

Authorities also searched the nearby convention center, where dozens of top U.S. intelligence officials are attending a conference. Michael Vickers, the undersecretary of defense for intelligence, was scheduled to speak there Wednesday along with Air Force Gen. Robert Kehler, chief of U.S. Strategic Command.

Ortiz said authorities were waiting on a search warrant to comb the RV more thoroughly. Investigators said they already had found the visas, maps, cell phones and computers.

Launch of EU's Galileo system set for Friday (AP)

BRUSSELS ? The launch of the first two satellites for the European Union's Galileo navigation system was postponed until Friday ? adding at least one more day to years of waiting for a program promoted as the main rival to GPS to get off the ground.

The Galileo system, which has become a symbol of EU infighting, inefficiency and delay, is expected to open trans-Atlantic competition with the ubiquitous American GPS network.

The EU had all the pomp and speeches about the dawning of a new age prepared for Thursday, but was forced to postpone it for at least 24 hours because of a leaky valve that kept a Russian Soyuz rocket grounded at the launch site in French Guiana on the northern coast of South America.

GPS has become the global consumer standard in satellite navigation over the past decade, reducing the need for awkward oversized maps and arguments with back seat drivers about whether to turn left or right.

Now, the EU wants Galileo to dominate the future with a system which is more precise, more reliable than GPS, while controlled by civil authorities. It foresees applications ranging from precision seeding on farmland to pinpoint positioning for search-and-rescue missions. On top of that, the EU hopes it will reap a financial windfall.

"If Europe wants to be competitive and independent in the future, the EU needs to have its own satellite navigation system to also create new economic opportunities", said Herbert Reul, head of the EU parliament's industry, research and energy committee.

There are still several more years to wait, but the satellite launch is a major step in getting Galileo on track. It will start operating in 2014 as a free consumer navigation service, with more specialized services to be rolled out until 2020, when it should be fully operational. After the initial launch, two satellites will go up every quarter as of the end of 2012 until all 30 satellites are up.

The EU hopes its economic impact will stand at about euro90 billion ($125 billion) in industrial revenues and public benefits over the next two decades.

The idea for the program first rallied support in the late 1990s, and its development has been pushed back with delays ever since. When it became clear in 2008 that private investors weren't lining up to finance Galileo, the EU decided taxpayers would underwrite most of the program.

The European Commission said development and deployment since 2003 is estimated at well over euro5 billion ($6.8 billion). Maintaining and completing the system is expected to cost euro1 billion ($1.35 billion) a year.

Critics have said the cost overruns were much higher.

"Far from celebrating," officials "who have supported Galileo should be making a public apology to taxpayers for this shocking waste of time, effort and resources," EU legislator Marta Andreasen of the anti-Euro UKIP party said.

Officials hope to delay the launch of the Russian Soyuz rocket by only 24 hours, although a new date will be announced once the investigation is complete, said Jean-Yves Le Gall, chairman and CEO of Arianespace, the commercial arm of the European Space Agency.

The launch was originally scheduled for last year, but adverse weather kept delaying construction of the Soyuz facility.

Antidepressant Use Skyrocketed in Past 20 Years: CDC (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 19 (HealthDay News) -- The rate of antidepressant use among Americans of all ages increased nearly 400 percent over the last two decades, and 11 percent of Americans aged 12 and older now take antidepressant drugs, according to a federal government report released Wednesday.

The analysis of 2005-2008 data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys also showed that antidepressants are the third most common prescription drug taken by Americans of all ages and the most frequently used by those aged 18 to 44.

Of people with severe depression, about one-third takes antidepressant medication. More than 60 percent of Americans taking an antidepressant drug have taken it for two years or longer and nearly 14 percent have taken the medication for 10 years or more, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention researchers.

The investigators also found that less than one-third of people taking one antidepressant and less than half of those taking multiple antidepressants had seen a mental health professional in the past year.

Commenting on the report, Dr. Tolu Olupona, an assistant clinical professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at Mount Sinai Hospital Adolescent Health Center in New York City, said that "it is surprising to learn that only about one-third of those taking one antidepressant have seen a mental health professional within the past year. The number of those who have seen a mental health professional do appear to improve for those taking two or more antidepressants."

But, Olupona pointed out, "the data does not show if those who were not being monitored by a mental health professional were being monitored by primary care physicians. Nevertheless, the rate of follow-up by a mental health professional needs to be improved."

In addition to these findings, the researchers reported that women are 2.5 times more likely to take antidepressants than men and 23 percent of women aged 40 to 59 take antidepressants, more than in any other age/sex group.

Forty percent of women and 20 percent of men with severe depression take antidepressants, as well as more than one-third of women and less than one-fifth of men with moderate depression, the results showed.

Among all adults, those aged 40 and older and more likely to take antidepressants than younger people. There were no significant differences between women and men in the length of use of antidepressants.

Fourteen percent of white people take antidepressants, compared with 4 percent of blacks and 3 percent of Mexican Americans. The researchers found no association between income and antidepressant use.

About 8 percent of Americans aged 12 and older without current depressive symptoms took antidepressants. This may include those taking the drugs for reasons other than depression and those taking the drugs for depression who are being treated successfully and do not currently have depressive symptoms, Laura Pratt and colleagues at the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics explained in the October NCHS Data Brief.

According to Olupona, "these medications can be effective for treatment of depression, anxiety disorders and some other disorders," but it is best when the patients receive "careful follow-up to manage efficacy, drug-drug interactions, side effects, medication compliance and a host of other medication management issues."

Baby Shower Foods Ideas | home and family blogs

Ideally, the best baby shower foods require proper planning and quite large portion of the allocated budget for the entire event. Most foods served in a baby shower are nutritious, appealing, and unique. These must also be according to the preferences of the mom-to-be. There are actually a lot of foods to choose from. As a baby shower planner, you must learn to select the foods that match with the baby shower theme. You should also focus on how the foods are to be presented.

An example of ideal baby shower foods is the fresh herb chicken or seafood salad. It basically requires either some chicken, cooked crabmeat, or grilled fish. Added to any of these are special herbs and flavoring ingredients that include a teaspoon of wine vinegar, ground pepper, sea salt, and extra virgin olive oil. Herbs can be fresh mint, chives, parsley, and tarragon. For the best results, you must make sure to use fresh ingredients.

Another perfect baby shower food is the chicken asparagus sandwich. Main ingredients for this yummy recipe include bread with crusts stripped out, cooked asparagus, and chicken, as the name of the food implies. You may also use cheese as a substitute to chicken. Some additional ingredients can be cream cheese and mustard.

When it comes to a more vegetarian baby shower, a great recipe to be included in the menu is the baby potato salad. Small and boiled potatoes are typically used along with thickened vegetable stock or broth, several basil leaves, some cloves of crushed garlic, freshly ground pepper, a few salt, and lemon juice. In addition, you can have mayonnaise, cream, or yogurt for the dressing. However, you should not include the lemon juice if you are using yogurt.

You can also have the conventional cucumber sandwich which is ideal for an afternoon baby shower. This sandwich is composed of finely chopped and medium sized cucumbers, margarine, cream cheese, and bread. Some of the suggested types of bread are brown, rye, or pita bread with crusts off. Mixing the cream cheese and margarine properly before spreading it into the bread will give the best taste. This sandwich is actually a good supplement to any type of baby shower foods.

It is also a good idea to have a combination of these foods for a certain baby shower. It only takes proper presentation and serving of these foods in order to make it suitable for the chosen baby shower theme. For example, if the baby shower has a fairy tale theme, you should arrange the foods and decorate the food table as if in the royal ball in a castle. Some common decorations for the food table are flowers, ribbons, rainbow cardboards, and several fairy tale toys.

If you prefer to order a buffet of baby shower foods, it is best to contact several restaurants or caterers ahead of time. As long as you have enough time, you can have more options not only for the menu list but also for the provider of the food. In this way, you have the opportunity to minimize the expenses.

It does help conceal among the gawky parts just like the cuts inside the entrance bumper and among the other design elements. I?ve to say that my preliminary response on the design was impulsive and the XUV500 appears to be a lot better than it appears in pics.

Jaguar Land Rover offered 102,451 autos globally throughout the April-August interval, up 10% from a yr earlier. Sales up to now fiscal yr rose 26% to 243,621 vehicles. After the acquisition of Jaguar Land Rover in 2008, gross sales of luxurious vehicles slumped due to the world credit crunch. Gross sales have recovered since, turning Jaguar Land Rover into the largest revenue and profit generator for Tata Motors. Tata evaluate-Seems smart, a Merlin has taken a number of impulse from a assorted Land Rovers. The flared headlamps housing projectors on a agree entrance and in addition a prosaic back have adopted a Land Rover?s character philosophy.

The Auto mobile industry is growing faster in India. There is more competition among the car makers that is the reason of faster growth. It will give benefits to Indian customers in terms of fuel efficiency, price, and size. The demand for small car with low price is strong in India. Gujarat?s auto hub thus goes beyond the production of cars. The mix of domestic and foreign auto companies also provides opportunities for skills transfer and learning.

The 2.2 Liter engine in the XUV500 Global SUV will produce a peak power of 140 Bhp and a peak torque of 326 Nm. Venture Capital Secrets, Business / Investing

A Venture Fair with Impact: Registration Now Open

(3BL Media / theCSRfeed) August 16, 2011 - Finding the next ZipCar Hundreds of applicants have applied to present their business pitch in hopes of raising between 0,000 and ,000,000 from a group of over 150 investors attending the Investors' Circle Fall 2011 Venture Fair this October 27th in Philadelphia. Attendees don't have to be a member of Investors' Circle - but they should be an accredited investor or advisor and, as Nick Flores, Director of Investments and Entrepreneurs Services notes, Looking for the next ZipCar. Companies considered for funding must be able to show, with strong and specific indications, that they are set to make both a profit as well as serious social and or environmental impact. Not only did ZipCar receive funding from IC, other well-known companies like Niman Ranch and Numi Tea raised significant capital with IC as well. One of the key aspects that differentiates this venture fair from others is that the investors go directly into a restricted room to discuss the opportunities they've just seen, in what is called The Investors' Circle Deal Debrief. Interest is tallied throughout the day via a mobile platform developed for IC by Socratic Technologies and then deal leads are quickly established to get the ball rolling. In fact, due diligence meetings are even scheduled to begin the next morning over breakfast. This process is clearly working. One-third of our presenting companies from the Spring Venture Fair have already received funding. Compared to an industry average of 5-15%, this is a notable improvement over our already decent historical average of 25%, says Flores. The application deadline for applicants just passed (on August 5th), so for now, IC is working its way through the many inspiring company profiles, only about 15 of which will be invited to pitch. Although presenting company names are not disclosed ahead of time to the public, teaser profiles will be posted here on October 10th. And if you're looking to invest in what might actually be the next ZipCar, attending the venture fair is recommended. Press is invited to attend the Venture Fair and can email us for a complimentary pass. Interviews with presenting Entrepreneurs will be available. White House Launches 'Startup America'

Transcript by Newsy.com BY MOLLY BOLAND You're watching multisource business news analysis from Newsy President Obama mentioned it in his State of the Union address- now it?s reality. Startup America is the White House?s campaign to out-innovate, out-educate, and out-build the rest of the world. But will it work? Bloomberg, ZD Net, The New York Observer, and Fox Business are weighing in. Startup America is a public-private initiative to help find funding for small businesses. Selected to lead the project: AOL Inc. co-founder Steve Case. Case tells Bloomberg, this project signals a new focus for the Obama Administration. Steve Case: ?...I think it?s great the White House really is recognizing that the focus of the next couple years has to be on the economy, has to be on jobs, and the best way to drive the economy and create jobs is to encourage entrepreneurship. They really are the big job creators in our economy.? Forbes and PCWorld report investors in Startup America include Facebook, Intel, IMB, and HP. But all those top notch tech companies are cause for concern for one ZDNet blogger. ?Entrepreneurs come in all sizes and fields. We shouldn?t be so enamored with tech that we lose sight of the much larger job-producing picture.? Also skeptical: The New York Observer, which says the program stands no chance against the recession. ?...the U.S. Small Business Administration plans to match capital+venture+business+investing billion in private sector investment over the next five years. That's a welcome contribution, but it'll hardly move the needle in a venture-capital market that saw billion in investment last year alone.? But some are countering the glass-half-empty outlooks. Fox Business talks with business entrepreneur Scott Gerber who says, it?s about time someone had a plan. Scott Gerber: ?I think that this is the first time I?ve seen something tangible that is both on a support level and on an educational level that truly is going to make real change. All the way from, you now, k-12 education as well as in the markets as a whole in starting new enterprises and new business.? So what do you think? Is the White House on the right track with Start-up America? Or is this just another tricked up government program? Get more multisource video news analysis from Newsy

How to Enjoy your Holiday Vacation With your Teenager : Kids ...

You are here: Home / Teenagers / How to Enjoy your Holiday Vacation With your Teenager

How to Enjoy your Holiday Vacation With your Teenager

Here we go! It?s that time of year again ? the family holiday vacation. Some families historically travel this time of year, while others will choose to stay home. Perhaps you are having extended family coming in for the holidays. Or maybe your family has decided to fly solo and stay home. Regardless of the plans, many parents can find themselves feeling apprehensive about spending a vacation with their teenagers. ?Is this holiday season going to be a disaster?? ?What if he/she embarrasses me in front of everyone?? ?We haven?t been getting along lately, and what if this entire vacation is filled with conflict?? Here are 7 things you can do to help make it a great vacation:

1. Include your teenager in the planning

If there is one thing most teenagers enjoy, it is giving other their opinion. This is especially true if someone is asking for their opinion. Ask your teenager some ideas of what they think would be enjoyable to do on the family vacation. Even if you set the ground rules of where your family is going, ask them what they would like to do some of the time. It is after all there vacation also.

2. Carve out some alone time for yourself

Ironic as it may sound, vacations can be exhausting, especially for parents. Whether your children are toddlers or teenagers, fatigue can set in from trying to accomplish too much in such a short amount of time. Make sure you take some time to relax yourself. A relaxed parent makes for a more relaxed family vacation.

]]>

3. Carve our some alone time for you and your teenager

Even if you are vacationing with a lot of extended family members, make it a point to take some time to spend with your teenager one-on-one. It does not necessarily need to be a huge ordeal with a lot of fan fare. Perhaps grabbing something to eat unexpectedly, or going for a walk in the morning. Even a conversation in the car while running errands can be meaningful. Find those rare teachable moments, and seize them!

4. Allow your teenager to have some reasonable amount of time alone

As your teenager gets older, there is a normal part of you that desire to spend a lot of time with him/her. You want to cherish the time with your daughter, and make sure your son knows the importance of your relationship. Yet, today?s teenagers? lives can be as busy as adults?. Like you, they may need some down time to just sit and loaf around.

5. Avoid placing any expectations or ideals on your vacation

Many parents visualize in their mind, and heart what they want their family vacations to be like. Their ideals are filled with holiday cheer, perfect children, and Norman Rockwell memories. Thereby, they unintentionally place expectations on their teenagers and family members. While dreams are not a bad thing, disappointment and resentment can arise when these expectations are not met. Take your vacation a day at a time, without any expectations.

6. Agree to put all major family conflict aside for the duration of your vacation

If there is a major conflict between you and your teenager, then agree to put the matter aside until after your vacation. Anyone can ?agree to disagree? for a temporary period of time. No one wants a vacation filled with tension and conflict. Perhaps when your vacation is over, both of you will be in a better emotional state to discuss your conflict in a better manner.

7. When conflict arises between you and your teenager, talk it out

No doubt there will moments of frustration between you and your teenager. It is unrealistic to expect otherwise. As the parent, make it a point to pick your battles. Then talk it out in a manner that will resolve conflict, rather than placing blame. Avoid harboring grudges and resentments

Oh and here is 8) Take lots of pictures! They will mean more later!

Are you looking for more common sense advice, practical solutions and even humor for parenting your teen? I invite you to check out http://www.parentingyourteenager.com/ where you will find tips for parenting teens, school, curfew, and more!

Is Outsourcing A Smarter Technique For Business? | Webmaster ...

The phrase outsourcing nowadays is frequently heard in the world of small business. Worldwide Outsourcing has influenced the way men and women manage their small businesses to a substantial extent. So, what is it about outsourcing that?s produced a huge amount of transformation within the business world?

To start with, outsourcing is an agreement with a person or organization to execute a specific job for a business. Outsourcing at this time is required by lots of companies by paying an outsourcing company to deal with part of the businesses labor, for example bookkeeping or even logo design. This is achieved to save money in terms of inexpensive services provided by outsourcing organizations, superior or equal craftsmanship in work, and also to unburden the company resources for other important functions to let this company evolve.

Outsourcing jobs started with the data processing sector. Given that many businesses are now realizing the complete possibilities of outsourcing professional services, a lot more services are being outsourced, such as direct marketing companies, tele-messaging, service desk, among others.

The most significant developments of recent years has come from the growth of businesses using web based technology to use outsourcing as a way to develop a stable service delivery business that may be run from almost anywhere worldwide. The low cost contract fees that can be obtained by briefly employing industry experts in particular areas to deliver components of a task solely over the internet ensures that there is a growing quantity of small companies that operate solely on the web employing offshore outsourced contractors to provide the work ahead of repackaging it to supply to the buyer.

One common area where this business model thrives is in website designing, analysis and marketing services. All components can be accomplished off shore and delivered digitally and service providers can leverage the size and financial state of outsourcing to offer top quality services at extremely decreased end customer prices.

Since the supplier of outsourcing services is usually based in developing economies, the rate for its products and services is remarkably less expensive and supplies identical if not better end result. Because of this, large and small companies that require services like these often rely intensely on outsourcing techniques to get it finished on a limited budget.

Outsourced workers is a very cheap and also sustainable strategy to build your business. Outsourcing releases your businesses resources to concentrate more on the development and marketing and advertising.

Listed below are some of the different tasks that businesses are now outsourcing to release their resources:

1) Computer data Analysis
2) Information Technology
3) Research
4) Engineering planning
5) Help Desks
6) Graphics work

These are merely a handful of services getting outsourced these days. Outsourcing techniques is increasing exponentially. On a daily basis fresh solutions are being supplied to benefit business owners. As of this year there are reported to be about 3200 professional services on offer. Internet sites like Odesk are fantastic examples of the range of solutions readily available.

In case you are beginning another company and have minimal start up funds then outsourcing may be the most effective answer for your organization.

With in excess of 9 years of practical experience inside the profession of Logo Maker, I don?t just take joy in creating but also composing articles to help small business owners. Together with a verified track record in logo design, and the success of the new website ?online logo design?, still finding time to write can certainly be a struggle yet a great challenge.

For the love of technology | Felix Salmon

Why has the death of Steve Jobs caused such a huge outpouring of grief? Mainly, I think, because Jobs had an ability to make very human connections with people. He could do it in a commencement speech which barely mentions technology ? but his greatest achievement was to do it with technology itself.

In the speech, Jobs talks about how and why the Macintosh shipped with multiple proportionally spaced fonts. From his perspective, that was a matter of good design ? part and parcel with his obsession over power buttons and USB ports. But something unprecedented happened when Apple?s beautifully-designed technology fell into the hands of humans: the humans loved it. Literally.

Other companies, once in a blue moon, make a much-admired piece of technology ? the HP 12c, say, or the Nokia 3310. But from the day that Apple decided to literally put a smiley face on its computers every time they booted up, real people started treating its products as they would loved ones.

If you look at Steve?s introduction of the iMac, in 1998, he quite explicitly compares the sultry curves of his gorgeous new computer to the unlovable beige boxes being sold by the competition. In many ways, the original iMac and the original iPod are the true iconic Apple products ? built at human scale, with human curves, and displaying what can only be called personality.

imac-medres.jpgoriginal-ipod.jpg

These products came out after Steve Jobs returned to Apple, to take the helm as CEO for the second time. In the interim, he founded Pixar ? probably the ultimate marriage of technology, humanity, and emotion. And I can?t help but look at the iMac and the iPhone and see something very Pixar in both of them.

In recent years, Apple products have become silvery, and harder-edged; the colorful logo has given way to a simple white one, and the iPhone 4, in particular, is quite a forbidding slab. I don?t think anybody loves their iPhone 4 in the way that people loved that original iPod; Apple is more successful than ever, but I do fear that it has lost some of its humanity along the way. In any event, it was Steve Jobs who, almost single-handedly, turned personal technology into personal technology. Which is a truly astonishing legacy to leave.

Association for Psychological Science

"False memories tend to get a bad rap," says developmental psychologist Mark L. Howe, of Lancaster University in England. Indeed, remembering events incorrectly or remembering events that didn't happen can have grave consequences, such as the criminal conviction of an innocent person. "But false memories are a natural outcropping of memory in general. They must have some positive effect, too."

That argument -- that memory illusions were evolutionarily adaptive and remain useful for psychological well being and problem-solving -- is the subject of an intriguing paper in Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal published by the Association for Psychological Science.

Obviously, the evolution of accurate memory -- for the location of food, the appearance of a predator, or the smell of a potential mate -- was critical to human survival. Howe cites findings in evolutionary psychology that the more relevant a memory is to survival, the more likely it is to be evinced.

But memory is a flexible process of taking in new information and blending it with what is already there, selecting or forgetting portions of experience; it inevitably leads to errors small or large. Not only do we regularly generate false memories, says Howe, but, perhaps because we create them ourselves, those illusions are more tenacious than facts.

In some instance, such illusions may have enhanced our ancestors' survival. "The animal that goes to a favorite food-foraging location and sees signs that a predator was there -- but not the predator itself -- may be on guard the next time. But the creature that falsely remembers the predator was actually there might be even more cautious" -- extra protection against getting eaten if the bad guy shows up.

Memory illusions, like illusions generally, can still be salutary. An inflated self-concept may result in greater confidence, which fuels success. Similarly, remembering your childhood as happier than it was may help you have more satisfying intimate relationships in adulthood. The "placebo effect"-- believing the sugar pill is real medicine -- can cure the ailment without side effects. False memories sometimes have a related outcome: Howe cites a study in which children who came to remember a lumbar puncture as less painful than it was were able to tolerate the procedure with more ease the next time. False memories can also help in problem solving. Howe and colleagues conducted experiments in which they gave children a list of wordsnap, doze, dream, pillow, bed. Those who falsely remembered that sleep was also on the list did better on a complex associative task involving that word than those who did not generate the illusion.

Memory, Howe suggests, does not work like a video recorder. "Memory is designed to extract meaning from experience: At the foraging place, something bad was going on. You don't need the exact information to get the meaning."

The point of the paper is not to exaggerate the value of illusion, says Howe. "Memories true or false can have a negative or positive effect, depending on the context. The key point is: Just because a memory is false doesn't make it bad."
