Obese Kids May Face Social, Emotional Woes (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Sept. 19 (HealthDay News) -- Obese 8- and 9-year-olds are more likely to suffer socially and emotionally than their normal-weight peers, a new study finds.

In the study, researchers in Australia checked children's BMI, a measure of height and weight, at ages 4 and 5 and then again a few years later. Parents and teachers filled out questionnaires that assessed children's mental health and health-related quality of life.

They found that kids with high BMIs -- meaning they were already either overweight or obese -- at ages 4 and 5 had 15 to 20 percent greater odds of having problems interacting with their peers, as reported by teachers, when they were 8 and 9.

While prior studies have made similar observations about the psychological difficulties faced by obese kids, one question that has vexed researchers is whether obesity leads to social problems, or if it's the other way around -- that emotional and other mental health issues such as depression help spur children to become overweight.

"There have been a number of studies over the past 5 to 10 years looking at whether or not obesity in young children and adolescents is related to emotional, behavioral and mental health problems," noted Dr. Julie Lumeng, an assistant professor in the department of pediatrics and communicable diseases at University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. "There's been a lot of discussion about which direction that relationship goes in -- does obesity cause children to be unhappy, or is it that unhappy children are more likely to become obese? Many people think it goes in both ways."

According to Lumeng, the new research suggests that children's obesity may have helped prompt their unhappiness, perhaps because kids are getting teased or socially ostracized.

The study, which was led by Michael Gifford Sawyer of Women's and Children's Hospital in Adelaide, is published in the October issue of Pediatrics.

In the United States, about 17 percent of children aged 2 to 19 are obese, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That is much higher than the obesity rate in the sample of nearly 3,400 kids in Australia used in the new study. There, only about 4.5 percent of boys and 5.2 percent of girls were obese.

Those differences mean that the effect of obesity on a child's social functioning may be different in the United States than in Australia, Lumeng said.

And despite some difficulties with their peers, obese children were not worse off by other psychological measures, including conduct problems and other mental health issues.

Of course, mental health isn't the only factor to consider in obese kids. Dr. Jeffrey Schwimmer, a pediatric gastroenterologist and an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego, said the physical health risks of obesity in childhood can have lifelong consequences. Those include sleep apnea and fatty liver disease, which can, over time, cause irreversible damage to the liver, diabetes and high blood pressure.

"Obesity at age 5 is a critical time point in life. It's the age at which most children are entering or in kindergarten, and children who are obese entering kindergarten and who remain obese over those first several years of elementary school are the most likely to end up with the health consequences we see," Schwimmer said.

As for poor social treatment of obese kids, it's not just kids, but other adults and even family members, too, who can be cruel, he added.

"If one looks at what childhood is all about, it's about developing both within our families and our peer groups, and learning both in and out of the school environment," Schwimmer said. "Because obesity is associated with impairment in those things, it can have a long-lasting impact. What I believe this research team was capturing was the change in social standing and the interaction with one's peers and teachers in the school environment that has a greater tendency to be impaired for obese children than for healthy-weight children."

Entertainment | writing and speaking article blogs

Entertainment consists of any activity which provides a diversion or permits people to amuse themselves in their leisure time. Entertainment is generally passive, such as watching opera or a movie. Active forms of amusement, such as sports, are more often considered to be recreation. Activities such as personal reading or practicing a musical instrument are considered to be hobbies. Entertainment may also provide fun, enjoyment and laughter.

A major criticism of entertainment is that it diverts people's time and money away from activities that are considered meaningful (volunteering, studying etc.) For example, watching movies and reading fiction are considered by many to be a waste of time. Many people find cinema /or theater and other live performance such as circus, plays, musicals, farces, monologues and pantomimes to be entertaining.

Entertainment is a ubiquitous phenomenon that has been transformed extensively by science and technology. To some extent that transformation has ethical dimensions that merit more consideration than they usually receive. Television, internet, cell phones, gaming consoles, gadgets and gizmos are the main sources of entertainment today.

There are many forms of entertainment for example: cinema, theatre, sports, games and social dance. Puppets, clowns, pantomimes and cartoons tend to appeal to children, though adults may also find them enjoyable. The purpose may vary from merely putting smile on the viewers face, to raising social awareness, to highlighting the moral vices of a person being caricatured. Dance and music:-Many people find involvement in social dance to be entertaining. Some interesting people listen to or watch musical entertainment. Games provide relaxation and diversion.

WHO grapples with chronic disease ? Health & Fitness ? Bangor ...

LONDON ? Everyone knows what it would take to curb the global rise of chronic illnesses like heart disease, certain cancers and diabetes, but getting nations and their citizens to make the essential changes is more than daunting.

This week marks the first time the United Nations will tackle chronic diseases in a special summit in New York City, but it?s uncertain what the meeting will accomplish. There are no concrete targets and even if there were, there would be no teeth to enforce them. There?s no guarantee of money either.

On Sunday, the World Health Organization listed 14 solutions it says could save tens of millions of people. The price tag for all developing countries to adopt these measures is $11.4 billion every year ? a figure hard to raise amid a financial crisis.

Noninfectious diseases kill about 36 million people every year, mostly in poor countries. In every region except Africa, these diseases kill more people than the ones that spread like AIDS and tuberculosis. But WHO projects that by 2030, chronic diseases will overpower the other ailments, including AIDS, even in Africa.

The draft document for the U.N. meeting recognizes ?prevention must be the cornerstone of the global response.?

Yet there are no firm commitments to cut the number of deaths from chronic diseases or promises to bankroll efforts to combat the problem.

Ann Keeling, chair of the Non-Communicable Diseases Alliance, said real progress isn?t possible without a specific goal.

?If you don?t have a target, you don?t know where you?re going or whether or not you?re going to get there,? she said. Keeling said officials should set an overall goal, like reducing the number of preventable deaths by 25 percent by 2025.

Previous efforts for infectious diseases led to specific strategies, like the campaign to put 3 million people on AIDS drugs by 2005 or the malaria strategy to get bed nets to everyone who needs them by 2015.

In contrast, the U.N. chronic diseases document simply calls for options to be submitted by the end of 2012 and says another meeting will be held in 2014 to assess progress.

Still, all of the WHO recommendations are cheap, with an average cost of under $1 per person per strategy. They include things like:

  1. Raising taxes on tobacco and alcohol.
  2. Convincing food manufacturers and consumers to cut back on salt.
  3. Promoting public awareness about good diet and exercise habits.
  4. Providing generic drugs for people with diabetes and those at risk of heart attacks and strokes.
  5. Screening and early treatment of precancerous lesions to prevent cervical cancer
  6. Rolling out hepatitis B immunization to prevent liver cancer.

?Compared to some of the most cost-effective interventions in health like vaccines, these are a very good buy,? said Dan Chisholm, a WHO expert on the issue. He emphasized the agency?s role was only to draw up suggestions. ?We can?t force countries to do anything.?

Even in rich countries, there hasn?t been much appetite to make major policy changes to fight chronic diseases. Europe has the world?s highest level of alcohol problems, yet in the wine-producing countries of Italy, Portugal and Spain, there is no tax on wine. In the U.K., health experts rail about the dangers of binge drinking and lament rising alcohol-related cirrhosis rates, but the government has so far refused to limit alcohol sales or hike taxes.

Fighting flab ? obesity raises the risk for most chronic diseases ? has been no easier. British chef Jamie Oliver recently called on the U.N. summit to make obesity a global human rights issue. Yet when Oliver introduced healthy lunches in a handful of British schools several years ago, children fought back by boycotting the cafeterias. Some parents even shoved hamburgers, pizza and french fries to hungry children through schoolyard fences.

Martin McKee, a public health expert at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said poor countries are even less willing to take on the alcohol, food and tobacco industries. ?Developing countries are heavily lobbied by industry and often represent the corporate interest, not what?s best for their citizens,? he said.

In parts of Asia, the Middle East and eastern Europe, tobacco giants including Philip Morris have worked to weaken tobacco legislation and offered to write countries? tax codes.

Last week, more than 140 health groups called on the U.N. to set guidelines to manage potential conflicts of interest in their dealings with the food and beverage industry. ?Without such safeguards, policies and recommendations will invariably be weakened to suit the interests of powerful corporations,? the coalition said in a letter to the medical journal, Lancet.

Many countries are also unwilling to turn into nanny states that closely monitor their citizens? eating, drinking and exercise. ?Addressing (chronic diseases) requires behavior change and most countries are very bad at this because it?s so complicated,? said Sophie Harman, a global health expert at City University in London.

She said most countries would likely voice support for WHO?s chronic diseases solutions but she wasn?t convinced much more would be done.

?All countries say they need to tackle these issues,? she said. ?But the implementation is difficult and then all you?re left with is the rhetoric.?

Horses For Sale In Texas

Central Texas brings to mind the beauty of rolling hills, fertile, lush valleys and low, level plateaus of stunning vistas and farmland. The area offers some of the most beautiful farming and ranch lands in the entire state. The Central Texas hill country, the lands between the Colorado and the Brazos Rivers, were among the first parts of Texas to be settled.

The earliest pioneers and families saw the wonders and value of a fertile river valley criss-crossed with streams and rivers and supported by the wonderfully temperate climate that makes farming and ranching a year round possibilities. Today's central Texas ranch land for sale has all the same qualities and beauty that attracted those early settlers.

Unlike the forested slopes of East Texas and the dry desert lands of West Texas, central Texas is a vista of undulating hills and green, fertile valleys. The land is ideal for farming and for grazing, as well as for hunting and other recreational uses.

Imagine waking every morning to the wide open vistas of sky and miles and miles of rolling hills. This is the dream that is calling to dream investors all over the country. As baby boomers and Gen-Xers seek new investments and retirement homes, they're flocking to the beauty of Texas lands in record numbers. The availability of large tracts of land at low prices is attracting investors of all sorts to the area; which means that those low prices are bound to start rising soon.

Types of Central Texas Ranch Land

Most often, when people think "ranch", we think cattle and open prairie and range. The truth is far more varied than that. There are all types of ranch land for sale, from working cattle and livestock ranches to hunting ranches and recreational ranches.

Hunting Ranches

Texas offers sporting opportunities to hunters and outdoorsmen that are unparalleled. The wide open spaces and variety of terrain are filled with an enormous variety of game, from black bear to ducks and quail.

Whatever your preference in game, you're likely to find it here. Many land developers are working to preserve the natural beauty and resources of the area, and you'll find many West Texas hunting ranches available in larger tracts of 100 acres or more of land. Others are dividing the land into smaller parcels to offer more opportunity for smaller investors and those who simply want a small piece of heaven to call their own.

Horse Ranches in Central Texas

Horse ranching is a gentleman's pursuit here, and you'll find many smaller Central Texas ranches for sale that sport all the amenities: pasture, barn, tack room and beautiful home. You'll also find many tracts of ranch land for sale ready for development. Unlike the more remote areas of East and West Texas, much of the land here will require little or no infrastructure investment to make it habitable.

You can still buy undeveloped ranch land acreage here for less than $10,000 an acre. A bargain price compared to land in most of the country. Nowhere else in the country will you find the advantages and amenities that you'll find here. Much of the ranch land for sale is close enough to major routes that it offers easy access to the metropolitan areas of Austin, but far enough away that the pristine beauty of the land is completely unspoiled.

Whether you're looking for investment land, or land for personal use as a primary residence, vacation home or retirement property, ranch land for sale is the opportunity that you've been waiting for. Central Texas offers the beauty of nature with all the modern conveniences.

From working ranches to undeveloped land, Central Texas real estate opportunities are the ideal investment vehicle for your retirement, or the perfect place to raise your family. When you choose to buy land here, you're investing in nature, in beauty, in sports and recreation and in preserving the natural history of our land.

If you're looking for the perfect home or the perfect investment, take your search to the verdant and fertile lands of Central Texas' hill country. You're sure to find ranch land for sale that's perfect for building your dream.

Summary Box: Household wealth dips in spring (AP)

HOUSEHOLD WEALTH DIPS: Americans' wealth declined this spring for the first time in a year, as stocks and home values fell slightly. Household net worth dropped 0.3 percent to $58.5 trillion in the April-June quarter, according to a Federal Reserve report.

BUSINESS WEALTH GROWS: Corporations, meanwhile, held a record $2 trillion in cash at the end of June, an increase of 4.5 percent from the January-March quarter.

A VICIOUS CYCLE: When people feel poorer, they spend less. That causes the economy to slow. Businesses then respond by cutting back on hiring and expansion plans. That, in turn, weakens spending.

Useful Home Improvement Suggestions to Conserve Energy and ...

People have their own reasons for feeling good about doing various home improvement projects. In some cases, a project makes the standard of living by which you and your family live better. Or, as is so often that case now, there are many projects that can be considered green or helpful to the environment. In many cases you?re helping the planet sustain life while reducing your own energy expenses. Just remember not to have too much fun playing, I mean working, with the power tools. There really are no big losers when it comes to projects like these.

Taking care of your gutters is one of the most needed home improvements. Sure, it is not fun and you cannot play with it when you are done. But, not handling what needs to be done with your gutters can be very expensive in the long run because it might damage your home?s foundation. If your house foundation becomes compromised, then you are looking at possibly major expenses to repair it.

When your gutters have to be fixed, getting the best material for the money will make a big difference. For instance, aluminium does not cost as much because it only costs in the range of five to ten dollars for a foot. Plus it is obviously light material which makes it much easier to work with and install. There simply is no denying about the potential of bath accessories to dramatically alter some circumstances is incredible. No one really can effectively address all the different situations that could arise with this particular topic. We will commence the rest of our discussion right away, but sometimes you have to stop and let issues sink in a little bit. In light of all that is offered, and there is a lot, then this is a perfect time to be reading this. The last remaining areas for conversation may be even more important.

You do not have to buy expensive cabinetry for a new look in the kitchen. Give your old cabinets a facelift with a process called refacing ? they?ll look young and new all over again. This can be done with kitchen cabinets and drawers. If you?re willing to go one step further, new hardware can make a world of difference too. Solid wood is used when refacing cabinets but it is an extremely fine layer. This makes the project a little more attractive to people with restricted budgets.

If you have a septic tank but do not know the last time it was inspected, then it is a great idea to have it done. It?s a good idea to establish a specific baseline and then re-check every 3 to 5 years for signs of trouble. When your septic tank is inspected, they can check for the amount of scum and any other materials built-up on the tank surface. You don?t want the material to occupy more than half the space of the water or you?ll need a proper cleaning of the tank. But this is one job you?ll want to leave to professionals who are well-equipped and have the tools to do the job. Plus, they will be able to check for any other possible issues with the tank and associated plumbing, etc. You?ll have a much better project on all sides of the equation if you invest a little time planning everything through ahead of time. Planning ahead can save a lot of frustration and help you avoid expensive mistakes.

Silent for too long: Bisping is back and ready to make ?Mayhem? pay

Silent for too long: Bisping is back and ready to make ?Mayhem? payPut anyone around Jason "Mayhem" Miller for two months and they may want to whack the middleweight veteran. Throw the highly-volatile Michael Bisping into that situation and all hell is probably going to break loose.

Taping for Season 14 of "The Ultimate Fighter" is done, but now the fun begins between the coaches. The testy Brit said he's ready to shred Mayhem at the TUF 14 Finale.

"[There was] a bit of friction between me and Miller, just a little bit, ups and downs. At the start of the season I thought he was an OK guy. By the end of the season I wanted to kill him. Fortunately, December 3, I'll get that opportunity," Bisping told Ariel Helwani on AOL's "The MMA Hour."

Bisping is annoyed by lots of people, so it's not shocking to hear that the needling host of MTV's "Bully Beatdown" irked him.

"Personally I find [the 'Mayhem' persona] quite annoying. Each to their own, though, I mean a lot of people find me annoying, so you know what I mean, I'll take the rough with the smooth," Bisping said. "He's not a bad guy, but he just rubs me up the wrong way a little bit. As I said, not everyone's gonna like everybody. He certainly doesn't like me, and I don't think I like him particularly."

In the end, Bisping thought he won the majority of the verbal sparring.

"Yeah, I mean he tried to [get under my skin], unfortunately Miller's mouth is bigger than his brain, so he didn't do a very good job of it. He tried to do it a few times, but they were really quite pitiful?I definitely get the upper hand throughout the entire season," Bisping said. "I feel he crossed the line a few times, there were a few instances that he definitely crossed the line, so come December 3rd, I'm looking forward to making him pay for his words and pay for his disrespect."

This is a great opportunity for both fighters especially Bisping. He was quieted for most of 2011 following a spitting incident after his Jorge Rivera fight in February at UFC 127.

The prefight trash talk between the camps got personal. Seconds after Bisping pounded out Rivera, he approached the American's corner and spit in the direction of Matt Phinney. There was no official suspension or disciplinary action taken by the UFC, but Bisping disappeared from the scene for a few months.

When we spoke to him back in June, he was still seething about the whole incident.

Cruise ships flood our seas - Hot Travel News, Trends, Deals

Australian travellers will have an ocean of choice with newer and bigger ships heading down Under during the next two summer cruise seasons.

The launch of Royal Caribbean?s Allure of the Seas ? the world?s biggest cruise ship ? and Celebrity Cruises? Celebrity Silhouette, which features the first lawn at sea and iPad menus, has had a flow-on effect with companies modernising facilities on their fleets and deploying bigger ships to Australian ports.

Before you embark, read about cruises:GUIDE TO CRUISINGHIGHLIGHTS FOR ALL GENERATIONSWHY WE LOVE CRUISES

ADVICE FOR FIRST-TIMERS

The addition of Voyager of the Seas, once the world?s biggest cruise ship, means Royal Caribbean will have its biggest ever fleet cruising from Australia in 2012-13 with Rhapsody of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas and Voyager providing 28 itineraries.

The 3840-passenger Voyager is a haven for active people. It has a rock climbing wall, an ice-rink, a sports court and a mini-golf simulator. But, for those who want to relax, there are 11 eateries, 13 bars and lounges and a 1347-seat theatre.

The ship will have two 18-night cruises between Fremantle and Sydney visiting Adelaide, Melbourne, Hobart and Milford Sound, new Zealand, and will also embark on two 14-night cruises between Singapore and Perth, visiting Thailand and Vietnam.

Radiance of the Seas has had a multi-million-dollar refit in Singapore which included specialty restaurants, family cabins, in-room flat-panel interactive TVs, children?s facilities, ship-wide wi-fi and an outdoor movie screen mirroring many of the amenities aboard Allure of the Seas.

The ship will cruise between Fremantle and Sydney with circumnavigations of Australia and new Zealand and itineraries in the South Pacific.

Rhapsody of the Seas will undergo a similar revamp before heading to Sydney from where it will explore the islands of the Pacific as well as visiting Tasmania and Queensland.

CELEBRITY

Celebrity Solstice will be another first-time visitor to Australia in 2012-13 and will join Celebrity Millennium which, although based in Singapore, will make port calls in Sydney.

Built in 2008, Solstice is one of the newest ships to offer itineraries in our region and will embark on a range of one to 35-night cruises visiting 28 ports in seven countries, including an 18-night voyage from Auckland to Fremantle.

The 2850-passenger ship will include a Lawn Club where passengers can play bocce or enjoy a barbecue, as well as a glass-blowing studio and 10 restaurants.

A guest-to-staff ratio of almost two-to-one promises great service on a vessel where most passengers have their own private balcony.

CARNIVAL

Next year, Carnival will base a ship outside the US for the first time when the 2124-passenger Carnival Spirit arrives in Sydney in October. the 10-deck ship will be revamped to suit Australian passengers ahead of a series of eight to 12-day Pacific Island itineraries, 13-day cruises to new Zealand and programs from Melbourne.

Local wine and beer will be served in the ship?s 16 bars and restaurants and Australian comedians will perform in the Punchliner club.

Carnival Spirit will have an aquatic park, complete with a water slide touted as the steepest at sea.

COSTA CRUISES

The rapidly growing Costa Cruises fleet is 15-strong and one of the newest ships will visit Fremantle in February.

The 2600-passenger Costa Deliziosa will be barely two years old when it arrives as part of a world circumnavigation. the state-of-the-art ship has the usual array of bars and restaurants as well as novelties such as a 4-D cinema, a three-level theatre, a grand prix simulator and a Turkish bath.

The burgeoning Costa Cruises fleet has allowed the Italian company to concentrate on its range of Asian itineraries which leave from ports such as Singapore and Hong Kong. There?s more on Costa on page 25.

BIG PLAYERS

Some of the world?s biggest ocean liners belong to the Cunard Line and the gigantic Queen Mary 2 will again call at Fremantle in 2013. still the biggest passenger ship to have visited Australia, the 1300-cabin vessel has the biggest ballroom and library at sea, 10 dining rooms, five swimming pools and a planetarium. It?s on a 104-night world voyage when it arrives in WA on March 26. her smaller sister Queen Victoria will also visit Australia.

Such is P&O Cruises? presence, it is able to offer itineraries from Fremantle, Sydney, Brisbane and Newcastle. Firmly aimed at the family market, P&O ships feature plenty of pools and children?s clubs and activities to suit all ages but they also have a wide variety of bars and restaurants.

Fremantle will be served by the 1900-passenger Pacific Sun which will embark on a range of eight to 17-night voyages in both 2011 and 2012. Refitted a few years ago, the 12-deck ship will offer eight-night return cruises to Broome and nine-night cruises between Fremantle and Sydney calling at Bunbury, Albany, Adelaide and Melbourne.

All other cruises include Bali with the 16-night Flower of Asia return voyage from Fremantle calling at Komodo, Lombok and Semarang and the 15 to 17-night Northern Escape program between Fremantle and Sydney adding Darwin, Port Douglas, Cairns and Darwin to the mix.

EASTERN SEABOARD

Much bigger ships are stationed at Eastern States ports with Pacific Jewel and Pacific Pearl cruising to new Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, French Polynesia and Tonga, along the Queensland coast and to new Zealand. Voyages from Sydney range from seven to 28 nights. Pacific Dawn cruises year-round from Brisbane visiting the South Pacific, the Queensland coast, and new Zealand in seven to 14-night voyages.

Princess Cruises offers voyages more suited to couples than families and will have five ships sailing from Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane in 2012-13. Voyages range from 11-night cruises along the Queensland coast on Dawn Princess to a 38-night Australia, Asia and new Zealand Grand Adventure on Diamond Princess which leaves Auckland on February 22, 2013.

With more than 700 balcony cabins, 12 eateries and a giant on-deck movie screen, Diamond Princess is the biggest in a well-endowed fleet. Sea, Sun and Dawn Princess will all visit Fremantle in 2013 on either Top End cruises or circumnavigations.

Too tall to fit under the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the 3100-passenger Azura will be the latest giant to visit Australia when it arrives in Fremantle on February 17, 2013. the P&O Cruises World Cruising ship was launched last year and will join Aurora and Arcadia in making 11 calls to Australian ports in 2013. Azura?s dining options are inspired by a world of cuisine with an Indian fine dining restaurant and an Italian casual restaurant. there are 18 line voyages between Britain and Australia or new Zealand on the ships which are known for their stately British elegance.

Holland America has increased its presence in our waters with both ms Volendam and ms Zaandam making 32-port calls this summer. many cabins on these medium-sized ships have private balconies ? making them great for scenic cruising. It conducts inside Passage cruises during the northern summer but from October to March, Volendam and Zaandam will cruise from Sydney and Auckland exploring Tasmania and new Zealand?s fjords and will also embark on South Pacific voyages.

The line will further increase capacity in 2012-13 when Zaandam is replaced by the bigger ms Oosterdam for a series of 10-25 day voyages around Australia and new Zealand.

SMALLER FLEETS

While most of the bigger cruise lines have the next few seasons mapped out, companies with smaller fleets haven?t released itineraries for 2012-13 but all offer interesting programs for this coming summer and these give an indication of future voyages.

Classic International Cruises has a tradition of Australian cruising and flagship Athena will again offer itineraries from Fremantle and Adelaide between November and April. Athena is a favourite with many who prefer smaller ships and the chance to get to know other passengers.

And although small by modern standards, the 600-passenger Athena has five lounges and bars, a restaurant, a casino and a show lounge. Most of the 240 cabins have ocean views and Athena is able to enter ports that many bigger ships can?t.

Classic International will offer three-night ?cruises to nowhere? on Athena which give a taste of what passengers can expect on a shipboard holiday, a 16-night voyage up the WA coast to Bali and longer itineraries to Malaysia, China and Japan. Athena will depart Fremantle on April 14 on a 40-night voyage to Portsmouth calling at Reunion and Mauritius, South Africa, Atlantic Ocean islands, Morocco and Portugal.

Small-ship luxury cruise company Silversea Cruises will continue to offer itineraries down Under with the 382-passenger Silver Shadow operating east and west coast voyages next year.

The vessel sets a high standard for hospitality with close to one crew member for every passenger and a main restaurant where every guest can dine at one sitting. there are big observation lounges and more than 80 per cent of cabins have teak balconies.

After a series of 15-day voyages between Sydney and Auckland starting in December, the Silver Shadow will arrive in Fremantle for a 12-day cruise to Singapore. Guest lecturers on that cruise include retired British Airways captain Eric Moody and hostage negotiator and humanitarian Terry Waite.

Seabourn Odyssey has been in service a little over two years and will be based in Sydney and Auckland during the next two summers operating cruises around Australia and new Zealand as well as Grand Voyages across the South Pacific to the US.

The 26-day new Zealand and Australian Splendours leaves Wellington on February 1, 2013, and explores the sounds of Fjordland, Bay of Islands and visits a host of new Zealand cities as well as Hobart, Port Arthur and Sydney. Again, the emphasis is on luxury; the 450-passenger ship has a diamond showroom and 335 crew to take care of guests? needs. the smallest cabin is a comfortable 27.5sqm while the biggest, the Wintergarden Suite, is five times that size. the vessel also has one of the biggest spas at sea, two swimming pools, six whirlpools and a marina which opens out allowing passengers to enjoy water sports on the ship.

The newest ship in the Seabourn fleet, Seabourn Quest, will visit Brisbane and Sydney in 2013 as part of a 116-day World Quest from Fort Lauderdale to Venice.

STAR CRUISES

Star Cruises has long been voyaging in Asian waters with ships such as the now-retired Gemini as well as Libra, Virgo and Aquarius. SuperStar Libra has a number of Taste of Asia cruises ranging from three to eight nights which provide a good introduction to destinations in Malaysia and Thailand, including Penang, Phuket and Krabi. These cruises operate until December.

Orion Expedition Cruises blends remote destinations with adventure on their Borneo, Kimberley, Papua new Guinea, Spice Island and Micronesia itineraries aboard Orion and Orion II. Both vessels carry about 100 passengers and are more like mega-yachts than cruise ships. And although their size allows them to enter small ports, luxury hasn?t been compromised.

Each has a restaurant and cafe, a lounge and a library, sundecks and a lecture theatre where onboard experts speak about the culture, flora, fauna and history of the area the ship is visiting. Every cabin has ocean views and those at the top-end have a balcony.

The itineraries are diverse and interesting. In December 2012, while Orion II is on a 10-night Borneo: Rajahs, Riches and Rainforests cruise exploring the indigenous culture and animal life of the island, Orion will be on an 18-night Mawson?s Antarctica itinerary tracing the steps of Sir Douglas Mawson?s expedition to the frozen continent.

The oceans that surround our continent are the playground for Coral Princess Cruises? three-ship fleet. the newest, Oceanic Discoverer, carries 72 passengers and is equipped with a dining room, lecture theatre, spa pool and wireless internet. an aluminium excursion vessel and two inflatable zodiacs allow passengers to explore the coastline.

This summer, Oceanic Discoverer will embark on 10 and 12-night cruises between Cairns and Alotau and Rabaul in Papua new Guinea with a 15-night cruise to Noumea. the ship will also explore the South Island of new Zealand on two cruises between Auckland and Milford Sound.

Although older, Coral Princess and Coral Princess II are similarly well-equipped. the 50-passenger Coral Princess will cruise the Kimberley coast with lecturers. the 46-passenger Coral Princess II has three, four and seven-night itineraries on the Great Barrier Reef.

Coral Princess is also chartered for Kimberley itineraries by Aurora Expeditions which also has Akademik Shokalskiy and Polar Pioneer which were built as ice-strengthened exploration vessels.

In February, Polar Pioneer will explore the Weddell Sea and Antarctic Peninsula while in April, Akademik Shokalskiy will head to the islands of Papua new Guinea on two 14-day voyages, the second of which has a World War II theme. Although the Akademik Shokalskiy is a little more luxurious than Polar Pioneer, both are comfortable ships suited to operating in harsh climates.

Interior Style Vs Interior Decorating Vs Home Staging Vs Inside ...

The other day a real estate agent whose listings I stage for sale introduced me to someone as a ?designer?. I failed to want to get the time to proper him, but I believed to myself, ?This isnt the initial time Ive heard folks use designer erroneously. Its usually utilized to label someone whos an inside decorator. So, why does everyone lump us all in one particular classification, when we all clearly do one thing distinct??

To set the distinctions succinctly:

  • Inside Design requires, amid many other points, the preparing of paperwork usually by a certified expert for the building of an interior space such as ideas and elevations, and details and specifications, including lighting, electrical power and conversation areas, supplies and finishes, and furnishings layouts.
  • Inside Decorating entails the adornment of surfaces in the inside room, this kind of as fabrics, wall coverings, furnishings, decorative components, flooring, light fixtures and so forth., and normally requires into account the lifestyle, style, needs and preferences of the person of the space. Even though inside designers may beautify, inside decorators do not style.
  • Property Staging is preparing the home for sale by means of updates and ?decorating? so that it appeals to the broadest assortment of purchasers for the industry that the property is in.
  • Inside Redesign is typically completed by residence stagers for home owners not at present promoting due to the fact it employs many of the exact same concepts that residence stagers use, such as primarily utilizing what home furniture and ornamental components the house owner previously has, with an eye towards the future sale of the property.

Now, let us discover each one more in-depth.

Interior Style

According to the National Council for Inside Layout Qualifications NCIDQ:

  • Interior design and style is a multi-faceted profession in which imaginative and technical options are applied within a structure to attain a built interior setting.
  • These solutions are functional, boost the high quality of daily life and culture of the occupants and are aesthetically appealing.
  • Designs are created in reaction to and coordinated with thebuilding shell and acknowledge the bodily spot and social context of the undertaking.
  • Styles ought to adhere to code and regulatory requirements, and stimulate the concepts of environmental sustainability.
  • The inside layout approach follows a systematic and coordinated methodology, like analysis, examination and integration of understanding into the innovative procedure, whereby the needs and sources of the consumer are content to create an interior room that fulfills the task targets.

The American Society of Inside Designers ASID is the major business for interior style experts. Specified amounts of its members ought to meet certain education, operate encounter and examination demands administered by the NCIDQ. More, some states have licensing demands for interior designers which consist of the passage of this exam. ASID also has continuing schooling demands for its members.

Inside Decorating

No ponder people usually confuse Interior Decorating with Inside Style. Even I had difficulty finding a definition for Interior Decorating. Frequently it mentioned ?see inside layout?.

Maybe its greatest to understand interior decorating as it exists in contrast to inside design:

  • An interior decorator would decide on floor coverings centered on the tastes and life style of the consumer, whereas the interior designer would get it a step more and search at usage, sound transference, flammability, and so forth.
  • An interior decorator would choose lights fixtures, while the interior designer would program for the area of lights and guarantee that it is in compliance with constructing and basic safety codes.
  • An inside decorator does not want to have any formal schooling and/or operate expertise, testing or licensing, while an inside designer does.

House Staging

Residence staging is the art and science of preparing a property for sale so that it appeals to the broadest range of buyers in order to sell rapidly and for top rated dollar. The goal is to make the possible purchaser fall in adore with the house, envision by themselves residing there and aspire to the life style the property portrays.

According to the Genuine Estate Staging Associations Consumers Manual to Property Staging, it is a ?systematic and coordinated methodology in which expertise of real estate, home renovations and creative layout rules are applied to appeal to a customer.?

Property staging involves any or all of the adhering to:

  • Evaluating what home furniture and ornamental components throw pillows, artwork, decorative objects, lamps, knickknacks, and so forth. the operator has, and:

- getting rid of some of the home furniture and/or ornamental add-ons, or else acknowledged as decluttering as nicely as depersonalizing elimination of family members pictures, trophies, collections and so on. so the customer can envision residing there

- arranging the furnishings and accessories for optimal placement to enhance flow the potential to wander freely by way of the area, focal stage enhancement e.g., emphasizing a fireplace or a lovely watch, equilibrium are there too numerous or too significant pieces in the bookcase or on only one particular side of the room? and the beneficial aspects of the property although downplaying the negatives

  • Cautiously picking for acquire or lease, if essential, the suitable home furniture and add-ons for the style of the residence and its industry.
  • Recommending, employing and/or arranging for enhancements, updates and repairs these kinds of as painting, flooring, sink fixtures, lights fixtures, window remedies, landscaping, etc.

Interior Redesign

As stated previously mentioned, interior redesign is like house staging, nevertheless it enhances the home for the home owners rather than for prospective customers. And it does so with an eye in the direction of its potential sale. It is like property staging in that it mainly uses the clients current furniture and decorative accessories to transform the space, and may also include the buy of extra furniture and equipment as well as updates to the wall shades, window treatment options, lights fixtures and many others.

Summary

To summarize the variations:

  • Interior Design requires the arranging of all aspects of inside area typically by a licensed professional.
  • Inside Decorating includes the adornment of surfaces in the interior area. Inside designers may well beautify, but interior decorators dont design and style.
  • Home Staging is planning the property for sale through updates and showcasing so that it appeals to the broadest variety of customers for the industry that the property is in.
  • Inside Redesign employs many of the same concepts that home stagers use, such as mainly employing what furnishings and decorative add-ons the homeowner currently has, with an eye in direction of the foreseeable future sale of the residence.

PFT picks: Tough going in Week 1

D. Brees PaytonAP

Florio usually introduces our weekly picks by coming up with some excuse why he?s trailing in the standings.

Well, it?s a whole new year. ?Which means I can only mention that Florio lost the regular season, postseason, and Super Bowl last year one more time.

Something tells me I won?t be allowed to write the introduction ever again.

Saints at Packers

Florio?s take:?The home team has won the regular-season opener since 2003.? The Saints will be the first team to play in the Thursday night opener three times.? The lockout workouts conducted by the Saints could be the difference against the Packers, who got together as a team during the lockout only to collect their Super Bowl rings.

Florio?s pick:? Saints 28, Packers 24.

Rosenthal?s take: These are the two best teams in the NFC.? Both boast terrific continuity with their players and scheme, especially on offense. The Saints added bulk to their defensive line, while the Packers welcome injured players back throughout their championship roster. It?s a new year, however. And the Saints are my new conference favorites.

Rosenthal?s pick: Saints 31, Packers 28.

Steelers at Ravens

Florio?s take: Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco has never beaten the Steelers when quarterback Ben Roethlisberger plays.? If the Ravens ever hope to host a playoff game, that streak has to end on Sunday.

Florio?s pick:?Ravens 16, Steelers 13.

Rosenthal?s take: The Steelers trot out the same old defense, with nine starters over 30 by year?s end. The Ravens look much different, with big changes to the offensive line, wide receiver, and in the secondary.? For Week 1, that favors the old guys. Mike Tomlin said he expects ?James [Harrison] to be James.? I expect Bryant McKinnie to be Bryant McKinnie.

Rosenthal?s pick: Steelers 20, Ravens 14.

Falcons at Bears

Florio?s take:?The top two seeds from the 2010 playoff field meet, with the gap between them seemingly much larger in 2011.? But the Falcons could be caught napping with a huge showdown against the Eagles looming, and with even more pressure following a 13-3 regular season that was capped by a one-and-done trip to the postseason.? Though the Falcons likely will finish with a much better record than the Bears, this could be one of those quirky Week One aberrations.

Florio?s pick: Bears 23, Falcons 17.

Rosenthal?s take: The Bears could quickly erase all the bad vibes from the last month with a win over a quality team. Unfortunately, they play a Falcons team that is a lot more versatile on offense with Julio Jones and Harry Douglas emerging. Chicago?s so-so secondary held up last year, but it?s overdue to get exposed.

Rosenthal?s pick: Falcons 24, Bears 20.

Bengals at Browns

Florio?s take:?Andy Dalton could end up being a great quarterback.? But it?s too much to expect him to win on the road in Week One of his rookie year, especially with a mediocre receiving corps and a potentially porous secondary.? The Browns quietly are improving, and Colt McCoy could end up being the steal of the 2010 draft.

Florio?s pick: Browns 30, Bengals 20.

Rosenthal?s take: Cleveland?s schedule sets up well for the Browns to be this year?s Tampa Bay. Playing the Bengals twice and the NFC West is a huge bonus. With all the conference realignment talk these days, relegating the Bengals to the NFC West actually makes sense. Perhaps they can be swapped with the Rams if St. Louis climbs above .500 this year.

Rosenthal?s pick: Browns 28, Bengals 13.

Colts at Texans

Florio?s take:?Last year, the Colts couldn?t beat the Texans with Peyton Manning.? This year, they don?t have Peyton Manning.? Sometimes, it?s really that simple.

Florio?s pick:?Texans 27, Colts 14.

Rosenthal?s take: I?ve given Bill Polian a lot of love over the years for his drafting prowess. This season will prove if Polian was building a true team, or just a bunch of guys around Peyton Manning. The Patriots won 11 games without Tom Brady. It would be surprising if the Colts won more than six if Manning doesn?t return.

Rosenthal?s pick: Texans 24, Colts 13.

Titans at Jaguars

Florio?s take: Apparently, beating the Titans means less to the Jaguars than pocketing $8 million that otherwise would have been paid to David Garrard.? Even with a potentially less-than-top-speed Chris Johnson, the Titans should have enough to sink Luke McCown and company.

Florio?s pick:?Titans 17, Jaguars 14.

Rosenthal?s take: The Titans are one of the toughest teams to evaluate. They have new schemes on both sides of the ball, but they also boast a powerful offensive line and Chris Johnson. I?m not sure what the Jaguars do well besides push the pocket with their defensive tackles. Expect the calls for Blaine Gabbert to pick up after this one.

Rosenthal?s pick: Titans 17, Jaguars 13.

Bills at Chiefs

Florio?s take:?Former Chiefs offensive coordinator Chan Gailey returns to town as head coach of the Bills.? And the Bills could give the Chiefs everything they can handle.? And I wish I had the guts to pick the upset here.

Florio?s pick: Chiefs 23, Bills 20.

Rosenthal?s take: Does the preseason matter at all? If so, the Chiefs offense is in huge trouble. No group looked more disjointed. They haven?t solved their receiver issues and the offense line struggled badly. Buffalo?s attempts to improve their rush defense will be tested here. They?ll pass the test.

Rosenthal?s pick: Bills 26, Chiefs 21.

Eagles at Rams

Florio?s take: The Rams have had seven months to come up with a strategy for confounding Mike Vick, who may get frustrated if the offense struggles.? With an emotional return to Atlanta coming in Week Two, Vick and the Eagles could stumble.? But even if they do, they should be good enough to get off to a 1-0 start.

Florio?s pick: Eagles 29, Rams 23.

Rosenthal?s take: This is a rough first matchup for Philadelphia?s ever-changing offensive line. The Rams pass rush is among the league?s best and will have Michael Vick running for his life. Josh McDaniels started fast in Denver as a head coach and he?ll do it again as an offensive coordinator in St. Louis.

Rosenthal?s pick: Rams 24, Eagles 21.

Lions at Buccaneers

Florio?s take: The game that possibly will be the only Week One non-sellout possibly could be the best game of Week One.? And given that the Lions beat the Bucs in their own non-sold-out building last year without Matthew Stafford at quarterback, the Lions should be able to do it again with Stafford on the field.

Florio?s pick: Lions 28, Bucs 27.

Rosenthal?s take: Fun game. Everyone is on the Lions bandwagon and this is the type of game a young improving team should win. Tampa is youngrier. The Bucs are the rare team that has someone to cover Calvin Johnson (Aqib Talib) and a young quarterback with as much potential as Matthew Stafford (Josh Freeman). Plus I know Florio will pick Detroit.

Rosenthal?s pick: Bucs 31, Lions 27.

Panthers at Cardinals

Florio?s take: Cam Newton could end up being a much better quarterback than Kevin Kolb will ever be.? As of right now, Kolb is the better talent ? and he plays on the better team.

Florio?s pick: Cardinals 35, Panthers 24.

Rosenthal?s take: The Cardinals are favored by a touchdown, which is a little crazy for one of the worst teams in football from 2010 breaking in a new quarterback. Especially when they are starting outside linebackers (Joey Porter and Clark Haggans) that Pittsburgh gave up half a decade ago. DeAngelo Williams will do enough to keep this game close.

Rosenthal?s pick: Cardinals 17, Panthers 14.

Vikings at Chargers

Florio?s take:?Someday, this could be the next Jets-Giants rivalry.? As of right now, it wouldn?t be much of a rivalry.

Florio?s take: Chargers 31, Vikings 17.

Rosenthal?s take: Florio thinks the Vikings will be frisky this year. This is a great chance to prove it. Minnesota?s secondary looks shakier than ever and the defensive line no long looks dominant. It?s hard to see Minnesota slowing Philip Rivers down.

Rosenthal?s pick: Chargers 35, Vikings 24.

Seahawks at 49ers

Florio?s take: Jim Harbaugh and Pete Carroll renew their USC-Stanford acquaintances at a higher level but, for now, on one of the smaller stages.? That could change if Harbaugh can do for the Niners in 2011 what Carroll did for the Seahawks in 2010.? The process begins with the Niners holding serve at home.

Florio?s pick: 49ers 24, Seahawks 20.

Rosenthal?s take: A lot of fantasy owners picked up the 49ers defense this week because it faces Tarvaris Jackson. Just as many owners picked up the Seattle defense because it faces Alex Smith. The 2011 NFC West everyone! (I?ll take the 49ers because they are home and the running game looks good.)

Rosenthal?s pick: 49ers 16, Seahawks 14.

Giants at Redskins

Florio?s take:? Eli Manning may not be a top-five quarterback, but I?ll take him any day against a bottom-five quarterback.? Injuries to the Giants defense and improvements to the rest of the Redskins roster should keep it close, but close won?t matter when it?s time to put this one in the official standings.? (As if it ever does.)

Florio?s pick: Giants 17, Redskins 10.

Rosenthal?s take: I picked the Giants to win the NFC East in July, and was too stubborn to change it when they started losing defensive players every week to injury. Washington?s strong preseason has Redskins fans wildly optimistic despite the strong presence of Rex Grossman. Something has to give here. I?ll say its Grossman giving the Giants turnovers and sacks.

Rosenthal?s pick: Giants 19, Redskins 10.

Cowboys at Jets

Florio?s take:?The Jets christened their new stadium in 2010 with a prime-time loss to the Ravens.? The home team faces even more pressure this year, with a visit from the Cowboys on the 10th anniversary of 9/11.? Look for the Jets to deliver, thanks to a maturing Mark Sanchez and a Dallas defensive secondary with some holes.? Besides, coach Rex Ryan surely will want to stick it to his twin brother, Rob, even more than usual, given Rob?s recent foot-fetish indiscretion.

Florio?s pick:?Jets 24, Cowboys 20.

Rosenthal?s take: The Cowboys may have endured the worst Wednesday practice to start the season of all time. They lost tackle Tyron Smith and cornerback Mike Jenkins came up limping. Dallas is going to regret paying Terence Newman $8 million instead of going harder after Nnamdi Asomugha. Take the Jets going away on what is sure to be an emotional night.

Rosenthal?s pick: Jets 37, Cowboys 23.

Patriots at Dolphins

Florio?s take:?This is a no-lose situation for the Dolphins.? After losing seven of eight games at home in 2010 and with the Pats winning all but two when playing both at home and away, no one expects Miami to prevail.? That dynamic could make the Dolphins a little looser and relaxed.? But loose and relaxed likely won?t be enough to overcome the talent gap.

Florio?s pick:?Patriots 33, Dolphins 21.

Rosenthal?s take: Florio ranked Miami low in the power rankings, but I think they?ll finish with a winning record, for what it?s worth. (Basically nothing.) Their young defense can be one of the best in the league and will give New England?s offensive line fits in a low scoring game.

Rosenthal?s pick: New England 20, Dolphins 17.

Raiders at Broncos

Florio?s take:The Raiders swept the AFC West in 2010, otherwise losing eight of 10.? This year, the Raiders likely will be better beyond the borders of their division, but it?s too much to expect them to win in Denver against a Broncos team that, while not playoff-ready, quietly is improving.

Florio?s pick: Broncos 26, Raiders 21.

Rosenthal?s take: The Broncos defense can be a lot better right away with Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil rushing the passer. Their defensive tackles may get run over on the ground, but that weakness won?t show up as much if they play with the lead. The John Fox/John Elway honeymoon will have legs.

Rosenthal?s pick: Broncos 27, Raiders 17.
