GTL with self-tanning lotions and sprays - Pocket Change Shopping Blog

Banana Boat tan

Topping the list of cancer risk categories is ultraviolet radiation, and ironically it?s one of the most avoidable ? keep out of the sun?s rays and apply sunscreen continuously. But we don?t always want what?s good for us. We talk more specifically about why it?s harmful and offer some safe tanning alternatives.

Let?s get more into the chemistry of a natural tan. The sun?s rays contain ultraviolet radiation (or UV rays). When the UV rays hit your skin, your skin recognizes the rays as an insult and product melanin in self-defense. Melanin is the pigment that darkens skin.

Food and Drug Administration scientist Sharon Miller explains, ?Over time, this damage will lead to prematurely aged skin and, in some cases, skin cancer.?

Even artificial sources of UV radiation such as tanning beds pose a cancer risk. Tanning beds tend to emit 95 percent UV-A rays and 5 percent UV-B rays. Both types of UV radiation penetrate the skin and can cause damage and cancer, but damage from UV-B rays tend to be more superficial (sunburn-causing) whereas UV-A rays get to deeper layers of the skin.

Sunless tanning products, such as sprays and lotions, are the best option if you still want that sun-kissed look. They?re especially great since, as researchers at the University of Edinburgh found in a 2010 study, not all the skin on your body will tan evenly.

You can go the even spray tanning route, but here are some inexpensive drugstore fixes for that bronzed goddess look:

This product comes highly rated on Drugstore.com. While reviewers praised that a Banana Boat tan looked natural (i.e., not that dreaded orange color) and dried quickly, a few complained that the formula was greasy and that the tan faded all too quickly. ($6.59 on Amazon)

2. Coppertone Sunless Tanning Gradual Tan Moisturizing Lotion

This budget sunless tanning lotion is widely available, creates a natural tan and is not greasy, which is why it received reviewers? praise. However, some couldn?t stand the chemical smell, and wished that the tan lasted longer. ($10.95, Swimoutlet.com)

3. Neutrogena MicroMist Tanning, Sunless Spray

This tanning spray gives a great, even color ? if you know how to use it. Compared to the price of professional spray tans, Neutrogena MicroMist is a bargain, but is best an option for experienced self-tanners. ($10.49, PharmaPacks.com)

A little bit of bronzer is a great way to add color to your face and even out your skin tone. You know it?s a favorite when it?s received an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 with over 1,500 reviews on the Sephora website. ($33.00, various retailers)

Fun fact: Researchers from the Massachusetts General Hospital Cutaneous Biology Research Center have identified the ?molecular switch? that controls the skin?s melanin production. This might lead to a way to activate melanin production ? and tanning ? in a safe way. Their findings are published in the journal Genes & Development, if you want the nitty-gritty.
